Learn by Teaching
Last
week I attended PETA class. The session was interesting and meaningful for me
because it was about microteaching. We did interesting activities in that time.
I and my friends were teaching in groups and we also assessed each other. From
the session, I learned many things. The first thing is I have learned how to
teach effectively start from the opening until the end of the class. From the
rubric, now I know that to have an effective opening, for example, teacher
should be able to get students attention and ready to learn. Besides, teacher
needs to have an opening activity that relates to the lesson. I also understand
that to have an effective teaching and learning process, teacher should pay
attention to some elements such as the content, the presentation, the teacher’s
presence, visuals, media and technology used and how to do good and effective closure.
All of the elements must be relate and appropriate to be used in the classroom.
The second thing that I get from the session is about preparation. From the
activity, I have learned that as a teacher preparation is the most important
thing. Preparation is not only about the lesson plan but also in many things
like the elements I have pointed out. Teacher should have “plan b”, “plan c”,
as many as possible since there are a lot of possibilities happen which can be
out of the expectation. For instance, when I did the microteaching the case
that I found was when I have a video to watched in the classroom but the
devices did not work (the sound cannot be heard and the picture cannot be
displayed). To solve that kind of problem my friends and I have prepared other
plan such as substituted it with power point or did the role play. That also
might be find in the real classroom. The other thing that I get is how to work
in group. I realize that as a teacher (candidate), I will not work alone. There
will be time to work together with other teachers who also in the same field
with me. I have learned to work cooperatively with other teachers; in this case
is my friends. How to divides the responsibilities fairly and do it in full
responsibilities is one thing includes there.
Another
thing that I have learned also is getting new information from the material
that presented or explained by from the other groups. For example, I got
information about types of public speaking and tips to do successful speech. From
other groups’ presentation, I could do a reflection and imagine about my
future. I imagine that I were in that situation, in the classroom. When I have
to listen to and pay attention to my friends, in that time I feel I was in
senior high school and remember my teachers. And when I came up with my friends
in front of the class, I also remembered my teachers and feel what they feel in
that time.
Actually
there are so many things that I got and learned from the session. Almost all
parts from the beginning until the end I can clearly understand. The only thing
that I want to know is that any relation between teacher presence and the
effectiveness in teaching. Teacher presence is the way teacher performs in the
classroom such as how to use nonverbal and verbal communication skills
appropriately. I also want to learn about how to improve my presence and my
communication skills, and how to having good confidence beside by doing
practice regularly.
Actually the session was meet my
expectation but I was dissapointed by a litle thing. When my group did the
teaching activity, the video that we have prepared cannot work appropriately,
fortunately we have two videos and other activity so the microteaching activity
can run well. For the next session, I expect I can attend the class in good
mood and good condition. I hope I can motivate myself to learn and prepare
anything before class so I could enjoy and learn more than I expect.

hi Raph, I think this is one of a good writing. I almost agree to every point of your idea. one of them is about taking the lesson from another group's performance. I agree that by seeing to another it means that we learn from them.
BalasHapusmmm do you have the same feeling with me about the difference between teaching in SEP and doing the micro teaching?
Hay Raphita, nice writing ^^
HapusI think I want to ask about how to deal with that kind of condition (by doing practice regularly can give good confidence)?
And the second is you have mentioned "I have learned to work cooperatively with other teachers; in this case is my friends". My question is what kind of cooperative action that you will do in team teaching?
Thank you
Firstly, I would like to answer Mamal's question. Thank you for asking Mamal :) Hmm..for me both of the situation is similar with me, I mean when I do teaching in doing SEP or microteaching in the classroom I feel nervous. In SEP I (and us) am watched by our mentor teacher and also students. We are assessed by them. And in microteaching we are assessed by lecturer and also students who also our friends. And, I don't know why for me personally though I have practiced I'm still feel the same feeling (nervous). But I believe as long as we are willing to learn and grow our passion YES WE CAN !! :)
BalasHapusDear Mbak Novi,
BalasHapusthank you for asking :)
yeah, practice regularly is one of important things to improve our confidence. Though we have prepared everything well if it is not followed by practicing it will be nothing, I think. If you ever heard proverbs "practice makes perfect".
And for the second question, yeah it's possible if in the future we will teach in team. And what I mean teach together here is not merely doing the teaching learning together at the same time. If you go to the school(s) and see how every subject teachers work, they will not work alone. For example, in senior high school where I studied the teachers worked cooperatively. They develop the lesson plan, the syllabus, and teaching together if it is needed. The same thing also I have found in a school where I did SEP. So, is it answer your question ??
