6th Reflection

Get Smarter from the Evaluation

As usual, PETA class is always interesting for me because I always have things to bring home and I learn a lot from it. At the end of the session I found that the teaching learning process meets my expectation since I get what I am looking for. So far, in my experienced almost in every session we have a very meaningful process with meaningful results in order to prepare my self as a teacher candidate. From last session, my friends and I did the evaluation that guided by the lecturer. We assessed our performance in previous meeting which is micro teaching. Each of group and members tried to reflect and evaluated the strengths and weaknesses or missed points that we did in our micro-teaching by using the rubrics as the guideline. It helps me a lot to increase my ability as a teacher candidate and decrease the imperfectness that can affect the successful teaching. It gains my knowledge more how to teach effectively.

Since I get so many things, I cannot explain one by one in this writing. In this reflective journal I would like to share my reflection by pointed out the highlighted points which very important for me. In my previous writing, I have explained some important things that teacher should pay attention to in order to get successful teaching such as preparation, what teacher should do in the opening until the end of a session, how to use verbal and nonverbal communication skills, the use of media and technology in teaching-learning process, etc. Last session was surprising me that, in fact, in doing effective teaching there are so many things that I never knew before or that I never pay attention to. From the evaluation and discussion, I have learned that another important elements that teacher should pay attention to are the learning objectives, the activities that are done to reach the objectives, and also the assessment. Those elements are interconnected each other. Now I know that it is important to tell the students about the objectives of the learning so they will be able to think critically, follow the process gradually, and engage in the learning process. By knowing the objectives also, it helps the teacher to determines the appropriate activities regarding to the objectives. And at the end of the learning process, both of teacher and students can measure or evaluate whether the learning process reach the objectives or not by doing the assessment. Another thing that I do not really pay attention before I join PETA and UET course is about using expression in giving instruction. Now, I understand that the expression and instruction given to the students will affect students’ understanding. From this aspect, I have to be careful in using expression and giving instruction. Besides, I also have learned about clarity and making clarification and also how to respond others’ question. The session really opens my eyes that the small things will give big contribution in creating successful teaching and learning process.

Besides did the evaluation, we also discussed about the differentiated instruction integrated with multiple intelligences. This is part that I did not really understand clearly since the explanation was very fast regarding to the time limitation. Even though I have discussed this topic from another subject, I am still curious with the detail content seen from PETA’s  perspectives. I want to know more about how to apply this method by considering and integrating to the multiple intelligences because in my personal view it seems a little bit hard to do effective teaching by using this method especially by integrate it with the multiple intelligences. Until now, I am still looking for more information about this topic by reading some journals relate to this and I also ask some of my colleagues who are teachers about their opinion of this topic.

Over all, I really enjoy the session and want to know more about PETA itself. What I expect from the next session is what I expect can fulfill my expectation. Actually, each time I come to the class I always guess what will we discuss today, what activities that will we do, and what precious things that I can bring home. By doing guessing and improve my curiosity it helps me to encouraged and motivate myself to follow the lesson seriously without any willing to miss any points.
