Buyung A. N Sudrajat - 5th E-Reflection

Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment
5th E-Reflection – Micro Teaching Practice

I was really interested and exited in attending the fifth session of PETA course after midterm since it was our micro teaching session. This session was really special because we did not learn any topics like usual but we did micro teaching practice. My friend and I had prepared the material and lesson plan well several days before the micro teaching and actually the task has given before midterm test, so we had enough time to prepare it well. I have learned many things from this session and it was new real experiences in teaching. I have learned about how to develop and create a good lesson plan before teaching and how to do micro teaching in group. I have learned that preparing the lesson plan is one of very important parts of teaching. I have understood clearly that in developing a good lesson plan there are some important elements that should be included. The important elements are the goals or objectives of the lesson, the activities, and the assessment. A good lesson plan is a lesson plan that can make those elements are appropriate and interrelated each other in order to perform a good teaching-learning process. I have also learned that a good lesson plan will really help the teacher to conduct a successful teaching-learning session. I have learned this from my own experience and my friends’ experience in this session.
Even though, I have learned about how to make a good lesson plan and have practiced in several times but there is always a new thing that I learned. From the session I have learned that every teacher has their own style in delivering the lesson although the lesson plan is same or quite same both in activity and content. I have learned this from my friends’ experience in this session in which there are two groups that had quite same lesson plan and materials. However, both groups could do the microteaching well with their own style. The thing that I still have not understood clearly is how to handle a class when our plan is not running well. I often face the condition in which there are many outside factors that can distract our plan i.e technical problem. I have experienced this in my SEP in which I have planned to play a video for brainstorming, however the computer suddenly hang and could not be used. So, I had to change to the next activity and my lesson plan did not run accordingly. I think to solve this problem, I should ask to my friends, senior, or my lecturer how to face this condition. In my opinion it also needs more time and experiences to be able handle that kind of condition.
Besides learning about how to develop a good lesson plan, I have also learned about how to do micro teaching is. I have understood clearly that there are many things that I have learned from my own micro teaching and the other groups’ performances. There are four main points that I have learned from the micro teaching session. First, in doing a micro teaching and real teaching the most important thing is the clarity of teacher’s talk or instruction. In my opinion it is really important because all the activities in the learning process cannot run well if the teacher’s talk is not clear. I have learned this from my own micro teaching and my friends’ performances in which there were some of them who speak unclear and sometimes using too much filler. As a result the other friends and I as a student sometimes felt confused with the instructions and did not know what the teacher explained. Second, the coordination and collaboration between members in a group are also important since the micro teaching is done in groups. The coordination and collaboration between members are important because the learning process would run well if the activities in micro teaching are divided proportionally and appropriately, so each member could perform their ability and contribute in the micro teaching.
Third, the choosing of model of instruction also is important. A microteaching session or learning process would become successful if the model of instruction is appropriate with activities and materials.  For example if the material is about speaking skills, it is good to use group interaction or guided discovery because those two models of instructions are enhancing communication and interactions between students. From the micro teaching session I have learned that most of groups used appropriate model of instructions with the materials and the activities, so the learning process ran well. However, I still need to learn more about developing the activities and choosing the appropriate models of instruction. The last point is about time allocation. It is also crucial element in micro teaching and especially in real learning process, because all the activities should be covered in the time that has been allocated. From the micro teaching session I have learned that the time for each activity in learning process should be allocated appropriately and the teacher should be firm and consistent with the allocation time, because some groups are inconsistent in time allocation of the learning activities. As a result the other activities in learning process will be influenced and in the end it can be influenced the result of the learning in which the objectives of the learning cannot be achieved. It is also the thing I have not understood how to handle it, because sometimes I also experienced that. To resolve this problem maybe I can will learn more about the classroom management especially in allocating the time and ask my friend or my lecturer.
This session was really interesting and meaningful to me as teacher candidate because it gave me more experiences in doing teaching especially teaching in group. Even though the micro teaching is not real teaching since the students are our friends, but the lesson plan and activities are done seriously. So, from micro teaching session I have learned very good thing in which learning by doing. By doing the micro teaching, I could practice and apply my knowledge that I have learned such designing the instructional, models of instruction, assessment, etc in real teaching. It is also really meaningful because I could reflect to myself what should be improved in my teaching. Moreover, I can have more experiences in teaching because to become a good teacher and deliver an effective teaching it takes time and many time of practice.
In general this micro teaching has met my expectation in learning and practicing micro teaching in group. Again I want to highlight that by doing the micro teaching; I could practice and apply my knowledge that I have learned. However, the time allocation for all the groups is insufficient, so not all the groups can perform their micro teaching. My expectation for the next session the last group can perform their micro teaching and get feedback from all the performances of micro teaching from Miss Ine. So, I can learn what the elements in micro teaching that are already good and need to be improved. That is my reflection for this meeting. Thank you.
