Seventh Reflection of PETA Class

The last meeting of PETA class in this year, I have learned about assessment. Actually, we have learned about it before with the guest lecturer, but in this meeting we learned more than before. As a teacher, giving assessment is so complicated. There are many things that should be considered. In this meeting, I have learned about the process how to give assessment and what should be considered. I could follow the class well, but there was misunderstanding with my friends’ explanation. So, I should ask and discuss again in the next time. In this session, I felt bored because the activity just discussion and then explained about what we have discussed, so there were limited time to Miss Ine gave explanation. I felt uncomfortable in group interaction model. Actually, this model could deliver the materials well, but I did not enjoy doing this model. For me, I would more understand well from Miss Ine explanation, because I could focus well. I thought that the previous meeting was more effective than this meeting, because Miss Ine gave adding, gave conclusion and have rest time to review the materials.
In this meeting, there were some new things that I could learn. Mostly, I could understand well. The criteria of effective assessment are assessment should be valid, reliable and objective. Valid is the assessment had to be suitable with what we want to assess. Reliable is the scores had to be consistence in every assessment. And then, objective is the assessment received generally or based on standardization. Besides that, I also got new knowledge about differentiation of assessment and evaluation. Assessment is wider than evaluation, in the assessment there are processes, diagnosis, and prepare learning process and what should prepared for learning in the next time. Evaluation is process to collect information and judgment. Actually, it could help me to understand well about both of them, because before I got explanation from Miss Ine, I thought that evaluation is wider than assessment. It was very important knowledge for me.
The elements of assessment are:
1.      Purpose is what the purpose of teacher wants to assess.
2.      Measurement is technique that used to assess.
3.      Evaluation is how to interpret the data.
4.      Use: diagnosis, grading, instruction.
There were many others things that I understand, but I cannot explain in this reflection, because it will very long.
The part that I was still confused is about the effect of assessment in the class, because I have different perception with my friend in my group. My opinion is assessment is will influence the students’ learning motivation and goals, it can be increase and decrease depend of each student. After that, of course it will influence the students’ achievement. In other hand, my friend opinion is students’ achievement used to measure or assess whether the assessment was effective or not. I will discuss again in the next time about it, so we can know what correct one is.
I thought that this session is very important for me as candidate of educator. I should know how to give effective assessment for students, so it will be positive motivation for students. There are many kinds and ways of assessment, so teacher not only assess by giving paper and pencil way. As a teacher, we should assess creatively, for example we ask our students to make something or project which in the project conclude some learning styles. It also helps students more creative.
In this meeting, I cannot reach my expectation, because I was very uncomfortable with this session. I hope in the next time, I can enjoy with the class, my classmate and activities.

7th Reflection by Yulia Sari Riyanti (how can I forgot to post it??!!! X0)

Finally I could open my eyes widely in the previous meeting of PETA class. I could follow the class well, and I even took a note of everything that being explained. I learned about assessment in the last meeting. Actually we, the section H students have learned about it before with the guest lecturer, but there were some part missed from the explanation. Even though I could follow the class well and I got a lot of new things about assessment, but I think last meeting’s session was not really interesting because there was no new activity, I just did the usual presentation, listened to the others’ presentation, gave response and discussed together. On the other hand, the materials that being discussed are meaningful for me as a teacher candidate because assessment is one of the teacher’s duty to measure whether our lesson has delivered well or not. From the discussion, I could conclude once again that being a teacher is not that easy, there are many things that I have to consider in assessing students’ understanding.
Ms. Ine used Group Interaction model in delivering the materials, so she divided us into five groups to explain different things that covered about assessment. There were a lot of things that we discussed, and I have clearly understood about the definition of assessment, the criteria of effective assessment, elements and domain of assessment, model of assessment, assessment effect and how assessment influencing students’ motivation.
·         Definition
A tool to measure students’ understanding
A means of collecting and interpreting students’ information
·         Effective assessment:
Valid = the assessment have to be suitable with what we want to assess
Reliable = the scores have to be the consistence/the same in every assessment
Objective = reach the standard indicators
·         Elements
o   Purpose = what to be assessed
o   Measurement = technique
o   Evaluation = how interpret the data
o   Use
Diagnosis = problems
Grading
Instructions

·         Domain:
o   Cognitive (assess students’ knowledge) example: paper&pencil
o   Affective (students’ attitudes) example: group discussion
o   Psychomotor (project-based, creativity) example: bajaj race
·         Model of Assessment
1.      Conventional
o   No connection between instructions
o   Doing test as the end of the unit
2.      Standard-based
o   Teach using variety strategies
o   Look at the result → decide what to do next:
Adapt instruction based on assessment of students
                                    Give more practice
                                    Help students to use feedback
o   Teacher feedback
o   Move to the next unit
·         Assessment Effect
Assessment impacts on students’ learning motivations and goals which can be positive or negative and it will influence students’ performance.
·         Motivation
o   Ego involvement/intrinsic = influence students’ performance
o   Extrinsic motivation = something from the outside that influence students’ motivation
o   Task involvement = variety of assessments are needed so students will be more motivated
My friends had explained clearly about their parts, so there is nothing that I have not understood. I might forget about the materials that being explained in the last meeting, but I can read it again in my notes.
I did not meet my expectation in the last meeting’s session because I really look forward to learn about how to elaborate a lesson plan. I hope I will get it in the next meeting.

PETA Reflection the Seventh

The last e-reflection for PETA course, I have learnt all about assessment. I worked in group to discuss some points, like what assessment and effective assessment is, elements and domains of classroom assessment, model of assessment and instruction, effects of assessment in the classroom, and influencing motivation through assessment.

I have understood clearly about what assessment is. What I got is assessment as a tool to measure students’ understanding, helping teacher to judge, and collecting and interpreting students’ information. This understanding, I got from other group. Unfortunately I have not understood clearly in my group’s part. My group got the effects of classroom-based assessment on students. There was little bit explanation on Moodle, and we had to re-explain to others. Actually all of my members got confused. Good for us when we presented, the other helped us instead, including my lecturer, Ibu Ine. That was embarrassing actually, for the next I will search more before presentation if I got few of information.

I think this last meeting before holiday is not so interesting. I have a lot of things in my mind, so that I did not focus in the course. I was sleepy, anyway, but I like the part when we gave feedback to Ibu Ine.

Overall, this session little bit meets my expectation to know about assessment deeply. Someday I will apply my understanding of assessment to my students. In LTM course, I have learnt this material, but in PETA I learnt more. I do hope the next session will be more interesting and meaningful.

Abdul Majid R - 7th e-reflection

I was learning about assessment in the last meeting. My friends and I learned using group work method, and my group got and had to explain about "Model of instruction and assessment - Assessment in the context of instruction". Actually there was no new thing in that meeting, because I had learned about assessment in the general lecturing session with Ibu Warih. I got a chance to explain about conventional model of assessment.
Because of getting a chance to explain about conventional model of assessment, so I understood clearly about the conventional model of assessment. From the explanation and material that I had got, classroom assessment was not only in the last part of learning for checking the students' understanding and what they got from the learning process. Classroom assessment is also done before main learning, and during main learning itself. Conventional assessment could be called as usual way in assessing the students, I mean this model of assessment is always be used by many schools until now. The example of this assessment is multiple choices test, fill in the blanks questions, short essay, and so on. I had ever experienced this model of assessment from I was in primary school until senior high school, and do you know, this kind of assessment is boring, and it could not cover the multiple intelligences of the students.
I understood clearly what my friends and I discussed in my group, but I did not understand clearly about the other topic that explained by other groups, especially about the effect of classroom-based assessment on students. The explanation from my friends was still confusing, I did not get the clear image in my mind about that. Maybe I need to read the material too, for ensuring my understanding about that topic.
I was discussing about the model of assessment, especially the conventional one. My friends who had ever got that model of assessment in the previous school told their experience and their feeling when they got conventional assessment. It was very interesting, because what my friends experienced was same with mine. The comments from my friends were in line with me, it was boring. So, I thought it could be an interesting topic to be discussed again. The interesting thing that was present in the last meeting was we assessed the lecturer. It was a little bit challenging. I had to express what I had felt along the PETA learning, and I had to be objective in assessing the lecturer.
As a teacher (candidate), I thought I had to solve this problem in the future, how to create a model of assessment that is comfortable, and interesting for students. However, as what my friends and I discussed in my group, these two models of assessments were useful. We could collaborate both conventional assessment and standard-based assessment in learning activity. Conventional assessment is still used by many schools and teachers in Indonesia, but the model that is be a trend in education in is the standard-based one. So, if we collaborate these two models of assessments, it will be interesting and challenging. For example, we could use bloom taxonomy in making the questions of multiple choices test, using performance test for the final assessment, and so on.
It was like in the general lecturing class, I could expect what we would learn in the last meeting.
Although I met my expectation in the last meeting, it was still interesting, because I still could learn from my friends' experience when they were in senior high school or junior high school. So, I had not only got knowledge from the lecturer, but also from my friends.
I hope I could understand what I had learned in PETA class, all topics. I also hope that I could implement what I had learned to the real field.

7th Reflection-Assessment

This meeting is the last meeting of PETA in this year. In this last meeting, I learned about test, evaluation and assessment. Actually, those are not really new for me. In the previous meeting I also learnt about assessment with the guest lecturer. However, there are some new part about test and assessment that I got from this meeting. I learnt about assessment deeply, it was about effectiveness of the test, model of assessment, the element and domain of assessment. In this meeting Ms Ine divided the class into some groups, then we did group discussion and share the discussion with the other friends.

After getting explanation from my friends, I got a lot of new knowledge about assessment. Almost of the material that presented by my friends is understandable. I really understood the material about model of assessment. At the first, I thought that the model of assessment are summative and formative assessment like what I learned before. but, I was wrong, the model of assessment here are conventional model and standard-based model. Based on the discussion with my friends and my understanding, the pattern of conventional model is the first the teacher plan an instruction before teaching, then after teaching the teacher directly give the assessment or measure the understanding of the students and grading. There is no reflection in this model. The examples of this model are multiple choice and short essay assessment. The differentiation of conventional and standard based model is on the interaction between the students and teacher. There is an interactive between the students and teacher, but in conventional model is not. Actually, there is no good and bad one of model assessment. It depends on the context and situation, sometimes we as a teacher candidate also needs conventional model to assess our students.

This meeting was very interesting and meaningful for me as a teacher candidate. I learned a lot about assessment as a provision for my future. Honestly, I did not really like this topic, always monotone and boring. However, I realize that as a teacher candidate this topic is really useful for me. I do not want to be bad teacher, I do not want my students do not like my way to assess them because I ever in felt in their position as a students. That is why I try to enjoy the class and serious in getting the material. The result was so amazing, I felt interesting in scrutinize the material. I got my expectation to enjoy the class. Thank you friends, thank you Bu Ine.. Have a nice holiday then J

Seventh Reflection PETA

In the last meeting of PETA course before Christmas and New Year holiday, I learned about Effective Assessment. Actually, assessment is the one of material that I have learned in the previous meeting with Ibu Warih as guest lecturer. However, in the seventh meeting the explanation about effective assessment was deeper than before and it was new for me. At the time, I learned about what assessment and effective assessment are, differences between assessment and evaluation, elements and domain of assessment and instructions, model of assessments, and assessment effect in the classroom.

In that meeting, I learned the material through discussion in my group and presentation of the other groups. Besides, Ms. Ine also gave clarification after the groups gave presentation. That was helpful for me, because sometime there were some groups that were unclear in their explanation. There were some points that I understood from that meeting such as the definition of assessment and effective assessment itself. From my understanding, assessment is a tool to measure students’ understanding after the teachers teach them. Meanwhile, effective assessment has to involve three points which is validity, reliability, and objectivity. In addition, I also more understand about the domain of assessment and I think it was interesting. It is because, before I learned about assessment, the thing that I knew assessment was only about score that was gotten by the students. However, assessment also involves cognitive, affective, and psycomotoric in assessing the students.

Because of sometime I did not focus during the class, so there were some points that made me still confused. The points are about differences between assessment and evaluation by the point of view PETA course and about model of assessments. The things that I am still remember, assessment is broader that evaluation and evaluation only interpret and evaluate the result of students. Meanwhile, about model of assessment, honestly I also confused to determine what conventional and standard based are.   In my opinion, the seventh meeting was so interesting because I learned many things about assessment and effective assessment. Obviously, it will be useful for me as educator candidate in the future. It is because, usually assessment always be related with the score of students. In fact, assessment is not only about score but also the ways of students achieve the score, so that teachers need some ways to assess students in order to appropriate with the objective of the materials. The ways can use elements and domain of assessment and instructions.

Discussing about my expectation in the seventh meeting, I thought the material was out of my expectation. At the time I thought that Ms. Ine would review the previous materials because it was the last meeting, but my guess was wrong. It turned out, we learned about assessment and effective assessment that were deeper that before. In addition, I thought it was remind for me to recheck the course outline before enter the class. For the next session, I would like to expect the meeting more interesting and increasing my comprehension. Furthermore, if I am not making a mistake, in the next meeting I will learned about how to make lesson plan and assessment in making rubric. It will be so interesting because I want to know how to make a good rubric.

7th Reflection

Assessment
Assessment is not a new thing from me. A lot of things come in mind when people, especially students, hear this word. For students, it is a frightening thing. Before, assessment was an ordinary thing for me. When I was in primary school, I used to make it as a simple and common thing but since my father was so strict about my academic things he used to force me to study hard and that was make me so stress. Day by day through my school life, I realize that assessment is very important to do. In my opinion, assessment helps me to know my ability in academic and it also helps me to improve my study skill. Whenever I get bad score, I can do evaluation and improve my learning strategy to get better score. Besides, sometimes assessment can engage and motivate me to learn because I have goals to reach such get presents from teacher and parents, I also can make my parents, especially my father, do not angry to me. May be when people hear this statement they will think that I am such a “fearful” child who afraid being punished by the parents, but it is a satisfaction for me to see my parents proud of me because I succeed in my assessment.
It was a funny thing when I heard some of my classmates’ feeling when they hear or think about assessment. Some said they were afraid, nervous, and some said they did not feel anything. I satisfied from last session that finally the lecturer discussed more about assessment. I have discussed this topic with a guest lecturer few weeks ago but from this session I get deeper understanding about assessment. Actually, I did not expect anything since I did not know what topic that my friends and I am going discuss this session in the classroom, but as always, the lecturer has many things to share and it always inspiring too. It was an interesting session because I have learned a lot of important things about assessment. We discussed what assessment is, what effective assessment likes, the elements and domain of assessment, models of assessment, until the effect of assessment. The session really opened my eyes and my understanding that as a teacher (candidate) I must be serious in doing assessment if it is not then it will affect serious things for me, for school, and worse-for my students.
In this reflection I cannot explain all and one by one what I have learned from last meeting but I try to conclude or summarize what I have learned in this reflection. Here I try to explain from my perspective when I put myself as a teacher. As a teacher, assessment is one of a crucial thing that needs serious attention. Before doing and giving assessment, teacher needs to know and understand the elements and criteria of the effective assessment such as the purpose of assessing students, the measurement, evaluation, and the use. Teacher also has to remember the domain of assessment that is going to assess: cognitive, affective, and psycomotoric. After teacher ready with those things, then teacher will be able to decide the models of assessment that will be used. There are two models of assessment: conventional and standard based. Each of models has it strength and weaknesses and it can be used based on the needs and situation. From the session, I have learned that the effective one is the standard based because it has planned instructional unit (the conventional also has this step), it has more various strategies, and teacher has more accurate result rather than use the conventional one since the conventional one is lack of connection between instruction and assessment. And now I know that my previous teachers always do was the conventional one because they never have various strategies and instruction, the types of tests only multiple choices, short answer essays, and constructed response. And if I may combine what I have learned from Language Teaching Methodologies (LTM), a good assessment should be valid, reliable, and consistent.
Actually, I understand clearly all the part and topic that was being discussed in this session. Especially, when we discussed about three things that teacher should pay attention in giving assessment and feedback such as ego-involvement, task involvement, and extrinsic motivation of students that can affect students’ motivation. I really liked this part. When I discussed about this, I remembered and reflected to my previous schools started from primary until senior high level. If I could turn back the time, I would say to my teachers that they should know this, that, here, and so on and so forth before and after do the assessment and look over their way in giving feedback. Unfortunately I cannot but I am lucky I know these all by now so I will do better than they have done. The only thing that I cannot clearly understand in that time was about the difference between assessment and evaluation. But now it is not a big deal for me since I have asked to my friends and read more about this.
Over all, I would like to say that I am grateful, happy, and satisfy with this meeting. I will more curious, learn more and apply more from all the topics that we have discussed in PETA course. Actually, I feel a little sad since this is my last reflection but I try to keep writing reflection though it will not be posted in the class blog. My expectation for next meeting that I can find more interesting, precious and surprising things to bring in the future. For the short term expectation is I can finish this course with satisfying mark. Thank you Ms.Ine for being and bring inspiration for me. Hopefully I can be like you in the future who always open students’ mind after the session. And for me, you are one of effective teachers with effective and wonderful teaching in the classroom.
