Third reflection_ Dina Fauziah
In this third meeting, we have learnt about model of instuction such a variety of types in giving instruction in learning process. We have to know what type or model of instruction we give. There are many models of instruction. There are two models which common use such as direct instruction and lecture-discussion.
Other model were developed from the latest findings in cognitive research, such as guided discovery, cooperative learning, differentiated instruction, multiple intelligences, and understanding by design.
Direct instruction is a teacher-centered strategy in which the teacher is the major information provider. In the direct instruction model, the teacher’s role is to pass facts, rules, or action sequences on the students in the most direct way possible. This usually takes a presentation and recitation format with explanations, examples, and opportunities for practice and feedback. Direct instruction involved vygotsky’s theory about scaffholding
. As we know that scaffholding, it means teacher as MKO (More Knowledgeable Others) who facilitate and give a chance the student to study. Direct instruction is best used when a teacher intends to disseminate information that is not found in textbooks. However, the direct instruction is very teacher-centered and teacher tends to dominate by giving lectures.
Another instuction is lecture-discussions. This instruction help overcome the weakness of lectures by promoting social interaction. Lecture-Discussion model, a teacher-centered approad to help students understand organized bodies of knowledge.
Discovery learning is an approach to instruction in which students derive their own knowledge about a topic through first hand interaction with the environment. The characteristics of discovery learning is interaction the student with their environment. In this model of instruction teachers tend to link one material with another material
Guided discovery is a model of instruction that involves teachers’ scaffolding students’ construction of concepts and the relationships among them. This model can increase students’ intrinsic interest in the topic being studied.
Cooperative learning is an approach to instruction which students work with a small group of peers to achieve a common goal and help one another to learn. This approach encourages knowledge construction through social interaction.
One of the important things, I still confused before what the difference between direct instruction and lecturer discussion. The difference both of them is lecturer discussion involved skinner’s theory about reinforcement the student and monitor the improveness of the student. In direct instruction teacher doesn’t do monitor for student’s progress.
After we already known some model of instruction. We as a future educator tend to use this kind of approach based on the real fact. We have to be wise to choose what appropriate instruction to our student. I am expect to apply this instruction easily.
