PETA  Reflection 3
The 3rd meeting of PETA subject was erasing my yearning for this subject. After 2 weeks of SEP, finally I can meet with Ms Ine and my friends to learn PETA together. At this 3rd meeting I learned about “Models of Instruction”.  From that meeting, I expected that I would learn many kinds of instruction that is used for creating an effective teaching-learning process.
My expectation was right, I have learned 4 models of instruction. They were direct-instruction, group-interaction, guided-discovery, and lecture-discussion. They were all new things that I found in this meeting except the direct-instruction method, because I have learned about it when I was in the 2nd semester.
From what I have learned, I could clearly understand about the guided-discovery instruction, because this was the instruction that I read and analyzed in jigsaw reading activity. This instruction is categorized as one of the learner-centred instruction, because it makes the students acted as the center of the learning process, while the teacher acted as a facilitator that guide them in discovering the materials. This instruction is supported by the cognitivism theory where students construct their own exploration.  There were 5 phase in this instruction. The first is Introduction and review. In this phase, the teacher introduced the students about the materials and reviewed the previous lesson. The second is open-ended phase, the teacher provided some examples, so the students could observe and compare them in order to build their knowledge. In the convergent phase the teacher guided them as they discovered more based on the example before. For the closure phase,  the teacher guided them to create a conclusion based on their exploration result. Finally the students were asked to connect their understanding with the case that happened in the real life in the application phase.
However, there was also one thing that I have not understood. It was about the group-interaction instruction. I thought that this was happened because I did not pay much attention to my friends’ explanation. Even when I tried to read the article, it was still hard for me to understand the whole meaning of this instruction. To solve this problem, I would ask my friend to explain about it to me and also read more books.
The third session of PETA subject was very interesting and also met my expectation. From the SEP sharing session, the jigsaw reading part that gave me a chance to share my thinking, and the class discussion that increased my understanding and cleared my question about models of instruction. As a teacher candidate, this lesson was very meaningful and important, because by knowing and understanding various teaching instructions, I could teach my students with the most appropiate instruction. So, the students would have more passion and interest in while learning in my class.
My expectation for the next session is, there will be another unique and interesting activities in the class. I hope there will also be a group activites, because beside we learn about cooperative learning, we also practice it at the same time.

  1. I totally agree with you that this session was interesting, because I felt the material as clear as you. But I think it will be better if you add some analysis of the instruction model after understanding those materials. For example you can add comparison between all that topic and your understanding. So, it will develop your understanding.

  2. Dear Derry,
I think your writting is verry good both in content and mechanic. If I may suggest you to improve your reflection, you can elaborate more about what you ahve learned for example you can give the uniqueness of each model of instruction.
    Keep up the good work~~~:D
