Assessment

Last week when I joined in Ms. Warih’s class, I learnt new knowledge about conducting assessment for students. I think it lesson was new thing which I learnt because I have not learnt before. Assessment is a process of gathering about students’ learning it is broader that testing and measurement, it can be observation, test and practicing. Making a good assessment is not easy work, so in that general course I interested to know more about conducting an effective assessment.

The part in that session which I understood completely was about the differences Summative and Formative assessment. Summative is assessment which conducted in the end of the semester. The examples of this assessment are final exam and national test. This assessment can make a judgment to certain students, because the student’s result might be worse so teacher just look the result of students’ understanding from this assessment. Formative is assessment which is conducted on going in the semester. It can be conducted in the certain meeting like as PETA class; the assessment is measured in the certain meeting such as micro teaching, students’ reflection, students’ activity in the class include students’ participation. This assessment can help the students to improve the next meeting, because it is conducted on doing.

The part which I have not understood completely was about establishing curriculum priorities. I was confused when I learnt about this. My solution about this problem was I asked to my friend who has understood or I asked to my lecturer about this part. The activity in Ms. Warih’s class was interesting enough because in the class there were many small groups each group contained four students. Before came in the Ms. Warih’s class the seats had been arranged well and every group members had each duty such as leader, logistic, recorder, and reporter. I was as logistic in that time, so my duty was gather and keep all materials needed. The other activities were making a venn diagram on the flipchart and doing gallery walk. When I did gallery walk, I interested because I could learnt from other friends.

Learning about this lesson is really useful for me as teacher candidate because through this lesson I can understand and know about an effective assessment for my students. Making an assessment is not easy as I think before, so I must learn more about this lesson. Assessment will help me as teacher candidate to know my students’ interest and understanding about the lesson. Other assessment’s benefit for me as teacher candidate is to help me in motivating my students’ skill.

I think my expectation for this general course has been completed. Before I joined in the general course of PETA, I expected I can understand and get a new knowledge. The new knowledge which I have got is about assessment. My expectation for the next general course if it will be existed, I expect the guest lecturer will share much of new unique method to understand easily about the lesson; I also expect there are many interesting activities so it will make me really excited.
