Erma Agus Setiyaningsih 3rd reflection


In the third meeting of PETA, we learned about model of instruction. Before entering the class, I thought the content of the lesson would consist of instruction model that can be used for teaching. In my records while studying in SSE, I think I have learned almost similar or even the same material/topic that related to instruction model that can be use in teaching. So, the material is not really a new material. Thus, I thought it will be easy for me if I could relate the current material to the prior knowledge that I have.  Instruction can be given to the class in one way communication like what we do in teacher center method, and also can be given only to direct the students to work out more with the other students like in students center method. Nevertheless, all of my expectation has already met with the actual lesson that conducted for the 3rd session of PETA course.
I thought that this material discussion will be boring because it is not the our first time to discuss some technique in teaching. However, because the activity is interesting, I feel happy instead in learning this material.
We learned model of instruction using jigsaw reading. Every student in the class got one paper about each types of instruction model. At that time, I got lecture discussion method. Therefore, I think I mastered this material most than the other type of instruction models. In my opinion, this model is similar with teacher centered learning. Lecture discussion method is quite similar to the other type of instruction model which is direct method while guided discovery is similar to student centered method. In my opinion, we cannot say one can upper hand the other models because every model of instruction can be use effectively in the real practice of teaching. In my opinion, all of the methods are effective to be use when as a teacher, I can create a good atmosphere in learning and also engage well with the students. It also really depend on the content of material. I cannot use one method for every subject because every subject has their own goal and method to be effectively tought.
However, there are some details that I am still confuse from models of instruction which is the direct instruction. It is similar from lecture discussion method but I cannot really figure out the special characteristic of direct method to differentiate it from the lecture discussion method.
I feel that this much material can be covered well with jigsaw reading activity because we can share with our friends and it can cover a lot of material that cannot be covered if the lecturer only explains it. When I try to reflect on the lecturer method, it is definitely belongs to guided discovery because it requires students to be active in discovering the material by them. In future learning, I expect more about the real practice of teaching (micro teaching) that can make us reflect this method to the real application of teaching and see whether it will work or not.
