Third E-Reflection



In the last session of PETA I learnt about models of instructions. In that session I learnt some models of instruction, such as direct instruction, group interaction model, guided discovery and lecture-discussion model. First, my friends and I read the text about those models of instruction. First time I read the text I did not really get the idea of the text, but when we had the discussion in the group, it helped me a lot.
The first instruction is direct instruction. I understand that direct instruction is the modelling that combined students’ practice and feedback to teach procedural and concepts skills. I also understand that direct method was derived from 3 theories, they are teacher effectiveness theory, social cognitive theory and social side of skill learning theory. In teacher effectiveness theory, the teacher should give the high-quality example to students, so it can trigger students’ critical thinking. Besides, the teacher also should use the clear language, so the students will understand the instruction clearly and the teacher should give the effective feedback for students. In social cognitive theory, it explains that the people imitate from the behaviours that they observe. It means that the teacher should be a good model for the students, so the students can construct the good behaviour from the model. The last theory about social side of skill learning. It has two concepts, they are scaffolding and ZPD. Teacher can give many kinds of scaffolding. It can be questions, modelling the steps in solving problem, and etc. In ZPD, the teacher has the role to help the students when the students find the difficulties in learning process.
The second instruction is group interaction model, it adapts the sociocultural theory from Vygotsky. This instruction emphasize in encouraging the students to develop themselves through group interaction. This instruction can facilitate students to share knowledge, appropriating understanding and to articulate thinking. The third instruction is guided discovery. This instruction is student-centered learning where students can explore the learning with the guidance form the teachers. So, in this instruction, the teacher will have the activity where students can explore their understanding through group work. When the students explore themselves, the teacher will guide the students by giving the example and also the question. So, the students will not be alone in learning, but the teacher will help and guide them in learning process.
The last instruction is lecture-discussion instruction. This instruction is a teacher-centered learning where the teacher will explain the material and also give the questions to the students. It provides comprehensive monitoring (check students’ understanding) and also information processing (explaining deeply when students give the wrong answer).
Those are the things that I understand clearly from four types of instruction. I do not really have the tings that I understand, because I also discussed the material with my friends outside the class. I just still to learn the material deeper by reading the material not only for once.
I think the activity in the last meeting was quite interesting. I like when the one student can learn from other students by implementing the group discussion in the class. I really like to read and then share the understanding to the class, because I can get more understanding from that kind of activity. So that is why, I like the last meeting class. I think the last meeting would be more interesting and useful if Ms. Ine also took more part in the discussion, like approach some groups and explaining several things. I am sure it will be very useful for the students.
The last lesson was so meaningful for me, because I can implement the models of instruction when I become a teacher someday. Before, I did not have idea at all about the models of instruction in the class, but now I know what should I do in the future and what kind of instruction that I will when I become a teacher. The meeting also met my expectation, because  I always hope that I can get the new things that I can implement in my future. I hope that in the next meeting there will be a session to review all materials before mid test.
