Third E-Reflection_Syaifurohman


E-Reflective 3rd
Yesterday in the third meeting of PETA was interesting, because I could learn about models of instruction. Those were about learning of teachers’ instruction in the class room. Models of instruction consist of Direct Instruction, Group Interaction, Guided Discovery and Lecture Discussion. Both of them are similar and there are connected each other, but there is the specific content for certain model of instruction. The activities in the PETA class were group discussion, sharing and clarify the result of discussion with lecturer.
I very interested in clarifying the result of discussion with Ms. Ine, because I can achieve my understanding clearly. The part of models of instruction which I can understand clearly is Guided Discovery. Guided Discovery is a model of instruction which engage teachers’ scaffolding in students’ establishing of their concept and connection among them. This instruction teachers’ scaffolding is very important for helping the students’ understanding about the material itself. The explanation is this instruction is decreased, because teacher prefer ask to the students. The question will stimulate the students’ critical thinking, so they will share about their understanding about the material. It helps teachers to check their understanding through the students’ sharing and their responses about the material.
Actually I could understand this instruction completely, because I was representative of my group to be master about this model of instruction. Guided Discovery has several phases, such as introducing and review, the open-ended phase, the convergent, closure, and the last is application. Introducing and review is about introducing the concept and teacher activates the students’ prior knowledge about the concept itself. The second phase is the open-ended phase. This phase focuses in promoting the concept to the students through the experience, so the students will be aware about the concept. The example is about Bernoulli’s principle, which is an example that I got in the group work yesterday. Scott practice and ask his students when he blow over the pieces of paper. So the students begin to produce their schemata through experience. It is actually third phase of this model of instruction, it is the convergent. Teachers always keep interaction with their students to check the students’ understanding about the concept. The fourth phase of this instruction is closure, in this phase students have to complete their concept production so they can apply it in the real life. It is actually final phase of this instruction, it is application. The last, students can conclude about Bernoulli’s principle, how can the airplane fly and how the steps that can make it fly.
Actually the models of instruction which I did not understand completely it was about the difference between both of models of instruction. It was the difference between Direct Instruction and Lecture Discussion. I still confused to take the specific both of those models of instruction. I think both of those models of instruction are almost same, so I am confused to take the differences.
The class activity which I interested it were sharing and clarifying, because I can learn from my lecturer explanation and also I can learn from my friend before. Ms. Ine divided the class into some group, and each member of each group got the different article. It activity, there was a small group and a big group. I cannot explain completely, but I think that activity was interesting. Learning about models of instruction is important and helpful for me as teacher candidate, because I can learn earlier about constructing the students understanding. When I have been a teacher, I can apply those kinds of models of instruction for my students. So in my future I can help my students and promote the concept of the lesson to them. The result is I can achieve the students’ understanding through applying those kinds of models of instruction.
Honestly my expectation for this session is not complete, because I can understand completely about the material. I still found difficulties in achieving my understanding. I expect for the next meeting, I can improve my critical thinking in understanding the material and I can easier know about it.

    What a good reflection. the contain is good, it is better than your reflection before. it looks you write this reflection based on the guide line. i like the contain of your reflection. one suggestion for me, in your reflection there is a word 'both' may be it will be better if you use 'all' because both is represent only two subject. the subjects that you mean are not two, but four (models of instruction). so, for me it is better if you use 'all of them' not 'both of them
