On the previous meeting
of PETA subject I learned many new things about assessment. I learned about
what is effective assessment, the types of assessment, and strategies on how we
couldassess our students effectively. At that time, the lecturer was a guest
from other school, we called her IbuWarih.
From that meeting, I
understood clearly about what is assessment, type of assessment and the
assessment strategies. Assessment was not only assessed students from their
grade, but also from their development from time to time. There were two types
of assessment, summative and formative assessment. Summative assessment is an
assessment that sums up the entire students grade in one semester. The aim of
this assessment is to give teachers clear view about students’ understanding in
one semester. The real example of this assessment is the final report which
usually received by the students in the end of semester. Formative assessment
is an assessment that is conducted simultaneously during the semester. It
provides teacher with information about students’ actual knowledge and
understanding, so teacher could gain knowledge and description to plan
strategies in the next learning.
There were several
strategies which were used to assess students. There were observations,
performance assessment, process-focused assessment, selected responses, and
open-ended tasks. Observations
assessment, observe students often and regularly from wide angle (whole class)
to focus on various activities, and from non-participants to participants. This
assessment is not typically scored or goaled. Performance assessments assess
students with goal directed task integrated with established criteria. Process-focused
assessment focuses on noting students typical and non-typical behaviors and
synthesizes them with evidence from different context to increase validity.
Selected response assesses only selected students in order to find special
cases. Open-ended tasks provide situation where students are given stimulus and
asked to pour their original ideas.
There were some things
that I have not understood in the meeting. First is about how we decide which
strategies we should use for assessing our students. Second, is how do I use
tools in supporting the assessment strategies. To overcome this trouble I
prefer to read more from the some textbooks, e-books, and also from the moodle.
Overall, the 4th
session of PETA was very interesting. I did many interesting activities with my
group in solving various tasks. From designing the presentation, solving the
case problem, and last the gallery walk. The lesson met my expectation. There
were many new activities in learning that I never did before and the teacher
also delivered the material with a good preparation. Beside that this lesson
was very meaningful for me, because without knowing the effective assessment I
could not be an effective teacher that could give good influence to my
students.
For the next session, I
expect there will be more interesting activities in class, and also class
discussion tosolve many problems which are often happened in real world.

waahhh... you understand the materials so well, don't you?
BalasHapusand, have you found the answer for the things that you haven't understood yet? how is your finding so far? :D because i have the same problem with you.
share, yaaa...
hahahhaha...
Wooow...Derry's reflection is so good. Because I don't really understand about the strategies to assess the students like what you say it in your reflection. I just write it down the strategies, but when I re-read my notebook about the strategies of assessment, I don't remember it well. So, thank you for your sharing. ^_^
BalasHapusI think, we all have the same problem in understand the best strategies to assessing the students and how to use or what tools that are appropriate to use in assessing students. In my view, we can learn it start from now. From the theories given, the teaching and learning in our campus, or observe the assessment process or strategies of our lecturers or our previous teachers in or previous schools (level). :D
