Fourth E-Reflection – Assessment

In this week of PETA I learned about assessment. In this meeting I learnt with all my friends from English department from 2011 and 2012 cohort. We were not studying with Ms Ine, but we had guest lecturer named Ms Warih. We studied in group that has decided before. I got a lot of new things about assessment. Actually, I have the prior knowledge about assessment, but in this meeting learnt deeper. I learned about the definition of assessment, summative and formative assessment and also the assessment strategies and tools.
There are many parts that I understood in this meeting. At the beginning the lesson, Ms Warih asked us to discuss in a group about the definition of assessment. After doing a discussion I can conclude that in generally assessment is a process of collecting a data to measure of the ability or understanding the students of the lesson so that it can be an evaluation to improve the learning and teaching process.
Besides, I also learned about summative and formative assessment, especially identify the differentiation of those assessments. At the first, Ms Warih asked us to read the material then discuss with friends in a group and doing a gallery work. Based on the discussion with my friends in a group, summative assessment is an assessment to give teachers and students a clear insight into students’ understanding. The students do this assessment in the end of the session. For example are mid-term and final exam. Formative assessment is assessment that provides information that is used in order to plan the next stage in learning. This assessment is to promote learning by giving regular and frequent feedback. This assessment happens ongoing of the lesson.
This meeting was so interesting and meaningful for me as a teacher candidate. For me, assessment is one of the important things that should be get the attention from the teacher and students in a learning. As what I said before that assessment can be an evaluation to improve the learning. So, as a teacher candidate I have to know about the assessment deeply to measure my ability students. I hope from the knowledge that I got in this meeting, I can implement in my future as a teacher candidate. For the next meeting, I hope that I can get the other knowledge to implement in my teaching in the future.

    1. hi no name, thanks for your comment
      :D

I think formative and summative assessment is one of the good ways or good methods to measure the understanding of the students, by using those assessment I really able to assess my students whether it is at the end of the session or on going assessment. So that, it can be my way to evaluate my learning teaching for my students based on the time.

I think I will use all the methods, because I think both of them have strengths in assess the students. I will use it depend on the situation, for sure I will use summative assessment at the end of the session and I also will use formative assessment in my class if it is needed.

      thank you :)
