3rd Reflection by Yulia Sari Riyanti (a bit long, sorry T_T)

In the third meeting of PETA course last Friday I learned about Models of Instruction. There were many new things I learned. I just knew that in giving directions, teachers cannot do everything as they want to students in the class, but there are four models or ways to do it. Then I realized that all of my teachers from Elementary School until now in SSE are using this guidance. However, my teachers from Elementary School until Junior High School were mostly using only two models; Direct Instruction and Lecture Discussion. In Vocational High School, the teachers were using all models in their learning, because our learning was Project-Based Learning, although not in all subjects.
The parts that I have understood clearly are about the strength and weaknesses in each model and also the special part that makes each model different from other models. For example in my reading, Lecture-Discussion Model, the part that makes it different from other models is the “Comprehension Monitoring Phase”. In that phase, teacher checks students’ understanding and discuss the presented material together. The other model is Group Interaction Model with the building students’ social skill as the strength. Again, I think there is no perfect method, each method has its own strengths and weaknesses, it depends on how good the teacher covered the weaknesses and bring the strengths up.
There were also parts that I have not understood yet, those are about the strength of Direct Instruction Model and the weaknesses of Group Interaction. I have to read and ask my friends more about that.
I think last meeting’s session was interesting because of the “Jigsaw Reading” activity. To be honest, I was not really excited at first, because I was not really get the rules so I think I was only read the materials and share it to my friends in the group, the classic one. Then Ms. Ine asked us, Section H students to move to “Expert group” for discussion. In that group, I got a deeper explanation and became a little bit experts about my reading then I have to explain what I have got to the previous group. Actually it was not a new thing for me, I have got that kind of activity in IELL class if I am not mistaken. If I have an opportunity, I will apply it in my class in the next SEP.
The things that I have learned in the last meeting’s session are meaningful for me as a teacher candidate because from the four models of instruction I can reach the objectives of my lesson easily. I also can develop them into various interesting activities in my lesson so my students will not feel bored.
I did not meet my expectation in the last meeting’s session because I thought that it is going to be a micro teaching role-play session, but it was not. Ayas, Novi, Mumu, Muiz, Febri and I have prepared everything for that day, but we did not do it. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed, but when I knew Nura’s group has nine members I was surprised and I thought it was impossible to do a micro teaching with nine people as teachers. On the other hand, I finally understand about the new topic; the four models of instruction.
In the next meeting I will present a micro teaching role-play with a new group members; Yuttie, Syaifur and Raphita. Hopefully my group and I can do our best and I can learn something new from others’ presentation.
