Fourth Reflection_Dina Fauziah

This is very special meeting I think, because we had a guest lecturer from Bogor, her names Ibu Warsih. In this meeting we learned about  about how to assess our student's task.

We had gallery walk to share and discuss about the way we assess. If I get the point, there  are summative and formative assessments. The teacher or lecturer tend to evaluate the student's work. How we assess our students by monitoringth eir achievement during teaching and learning process.

One of our goals by assessing our students is we as  a teacher will enable to plan and refine their method in teaching to make a better evaluation for their better progressing. Teacher tend to be a well- designer plan of material. There are a lot of ways to improve the teacher ability by experiencing what thata they get, their skills in real fact, and discussing with another master teacher in their environment.

First, summative assessment: make a clear insight in student's understanding. This is very useful not only for students but also for teacher, giving a spaces for students to show up what they have learned. This type also can monitor how far the understanding of main idea and tend to action of each student.

Second, we have learned about formative assessment. This type tend to give the teacher a little bit about illustration about plan in the stage of learning. This type help the student in strongly prior knowledge what they already learn and what they want to learn. Formative talk about how to linked and function purposefully work together by teaching. This type very useful for improving student by giving motivation, and enthusiasim for learning. That's why this is very suitable for students who are low achiever in classroom.

In short, this meeting help me so much to give me an illustration about how to assess our students by choosing one of this kind of typess. I think this is help us a lot as candidate teacher in the future. So, let's never end to improve our skills a great and inspiring teacher for our environment.

Guest Lecturer Reflection
Effective Assessment
I learnt about effective assessment last week. I had guest lecturer from Madania School in Bogor, her name is Ibu Warih.  Knowing how to make and implemented the effective assessment is something new for me. That was a good moment for me to know and understood about what effective assessment is. In learning process, we divided into 14 groups. Having a group discussion is not something new for my class. So, that is why I enjoyed the learning process last week. From Ibu Warih explanations, I got some clear material and views. Such as a definition of effective assessment, an important of effective assessment, and the types of the effective assessment. When she was explaining the topic, I was constructing my own understanding about those kinds of things.  This method is very helpful to me to understand the topic clearly. I really interesting, with the way she explained about the types of assessment. She made gallery walk based on group discussion about the difference of assessment types.
There are summative and formative. In general, Summative is assessment for judging the student successful in learning process than formative is monitoring the students in learning progress. So, from simple group discussion and gallery walk, I can get something new knowledge for being a teacher later. The topics is really meaningful for the teacher candidate, because in last session I have studied about how to become an effective teacher and this topics is supported the last topics. Logically, if I know the way to be an effective teacher but, I don’t know to assess my students it is very funny right? So, all the materials are having relation each other.
As a teacher candidate I have to understand all of them, to make myself as an effective teacher for my nation in the future. Fortunately, the meeting last week was same with my expectation. Having an enjoy class, but I can get understood clearly about the topics. I hope next meeting, I can do the same thing like this or maybe the better one.

Fourth Reflection of PETA

Fourth Reflection of PETA
Last week on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, there was a Guest Lecturer, especially in PETA course with the topic “Assessment”. I have learned many things that were new knowledge for me. As a candidate of educator, I could learn how to assess our students in the future and some kinds of assessment. It was good and useful for me.
The parts that I had understood well were the definition of assessment, the reason we do assessment to students, effective assessments, summative and formative assessments, etc. Assessment is the process to know students’ knowledge and capability or skills about the materials that we explain or provide to them before, so the teacher can reflects their teaching process. The teacher can also makes a plan in learning in the future from the result of assessment, because the teacher will know whether her/his technique have succeed or yet. And then, the teacher does to assess the students because to provide feedback on learning process and designed to inform practice. The effective assessments that should applied by the teacher are more like scrapbook than a single snapshot, along the way using a variety of methods and formats, and match the type of the assessment and the needed of evidence of achieving desired the result.
As a teacher, we have to think more about the students than our self when assess them, we should facilitate the students need, for example giving variety assessment, because there are differences of each students. The form of assessment is not only a test or score, but also quiz, questioning and answering orally, assignment, games, etc. And then, we as a teacher should know how to show the students’ score which more appropriate, that is not publish it in public or by tell to all students. It wills more appropriate if the teacher just gives or tells individually.
The differences between Summative and Formative Assessment are:
If summative assessment has some characteristics, such as:
-          It provides to students at the middle or final semester or at the end of the topic, for examples; Final Test, MID Test, etc. It is a formal test.
-          It assesses several elements simultaneously.
-          The goal of this assessment is to know what the students know and do.
-          It seems judge the overall success of a process.
-          The proportion of this test bigger than formative assessment, etc.
The characteristics of formative assessment are:
-          It is regularly and frequently tests, so there are step by step to assess the students. It is informal test, because it can by questioning and answering orally, games, assignments, etc. It usually to improve the students’ low score.
-          It assesses in specific element or skill, examples; speaking, analyzing, writing, reading, etc.
-          The goal is more emphasize or to know students’ understanding and students’ difficulties about the materials.
-          The proportion of this test smaller than summative assessment.
The part that I am still confused is about the Cambridge, because I have lost my concentration. The time was up, so my brain began lazy. I will ask my friends who understand about that well and read more lately. I thought that the class was enjoyable, because there were some activities such as; Question and Answer Session, Group Discussion, Gallery Walk, etc. I can understand the materials from the lecturer’s explanation and those activities, especially by group discussion.
I thought that the materials were very meaningful for me as a candidate of educator, because it will helps my future, from that session I know how to assess our students effectively. I also know what kinds of assessment are. I thought that I would be bored in that session, because the time of schedule was change more afternoons and I would not understand the materials well. So, my expectation on that day was I could keep my spirit and keep my brain on. Apparently, that session was good and the lecturer used a good method, she understood the situation. She could create a good lesson, so I could understand and followed the lesson better. And the last, my expectation for the next session is I can improve our skill and understanding in this course better than before. I hope that I can enjoy the class and with my classmate too. Thank you.

The Fourth Reflection with Guest Lecturer

The Fourth Reflection
Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment

Before Mid-Term Examination, we have general class with guest lecturer from Madania Indonesian School with World Class Standard in Bogor. Her name is Ibu Warih Wijayanti. This general class talked about assessment. Actually, I do not know where and what Madania Indonesian School is. Then, I am searching about that school and I feel awesome with the school. I am really thankful to Miss Ine to invite Ibu Warih as a guest lecturer, because Ibu Warih could share her knowledge about assessment and I can improve my knowledge as a teacher candidate.
Woolfolk said that assessment is a process of gathering information about students’ learning and it is broader than a test. Assessment not only assesses the students from a test, but also it can assess from students’ activities and attitude while teaching and learning occur. While in the classroom, the teacher assesses students’ participation whether they are active or passive, the teacher observe students when they work in group, the teacher assesses students’ understanding by asking questions or listening what they say in the discussion. The reasons of the teacher need assessment divided into 3 reasons. There are the teacher provides feedback to students, the teacher identifies what students’ understanding while in teaching and learning process, and the teacher designs to inform what students doing practice during teaching and learning process. The teacher has 2 types for assessing students’ understanding such as traditional quizes & tests and performance tasks & projects. Traditional quizes & tests includes paper and pencil, selected-response, and constructed-response. These usually use in teaching and learning process and everyone have known and familiar with this tests. Whereas, performance tasks & projects are complex, open-ended, and authentic. It means the teacher will give students to be more creative to have big ideas and core tasks. The assessment divides into 2 assessment such as summative assessment and formative assessment. Summative assessment will be given from the teacher at the end of semester and usually gives a report based on school’s policy. It is like Mid-Term Examination and Final-Term Examination. Description of formative assessment just gives feedback regulary and frequently from the teacher and it will be happen in teaching and learning activities. For example, the teacher observes students when they works in a group, the teacher asks question directly in the classroom. The teacher not only assess students from the test, but also the teacher assess students’ attitude and participation in the classroom.
This topic will be meaningful for me as a teacher candidate. I know how to assess the students and why assessment the students is important. After I know about assessment, I will consider what I will choose for assessing students in the classroom. I understood about assessment, but sometimes I cannot the differences between summative and formative assessment. So, in the next meeting after Mid-Term Examination, I hope I will understand clearly about the topic and I can apply all topics for me as a teacher candidate in the future.

4th reflection PETA - Mustika Hati

In the previous meeting of PETA, there was a general course with guest lecturer, Ibu Warih Wijayanti, from Madaniyah School. She taught about Assessment. Before coming to the class miss Ine already divided us into small group that consist of four people and I learnt in some  group with Geby, Sinta and Ponco.
Based on my understanding, assessment is a kind of tools to assess the students and I should pay attention to the assesment since it is important to know. According to Wiggins and Mc Tighe, effective assessment is like a scrapbook than a single shot. It means that the teacher have to assess the students based on the whole process in learning using a variety of formats and methods. Assessment itself divided into two, summative and formative assesment which can be used to measure our students understanding and it can be as reflection also.
Based on my understanding summative assement  has low feedbacks possibility and can be done at the end of learning process. On the other hand, feedbacks are the most important parts in formative assements and it can be done along the learning process and it is not merely the scores.
I think, the previous meeting was quite interesting because we work in group and I also could study with 2012 cohort. Group work always made me curious on what to do because it must be interesting and fun. However, there are some times when I felt sleepy because the lecturer’s voice is too soft and slow. I hope I could learn more about the assessment.
This session was really fulfilled my expectation. I could learn a lot of things about assesment. My expectation for the next meeting is, I can present my group lesson plan well and learn new many things again.

About Assessment

Last meeting of PETA before midterm test was very special. We had a guest lecturer, Ibu Warih, to share us more about Assessment. in a big class, we were divided into more than 10 groups. Each group consisted of 4 students. This is our first time also to be in a class with 2012 cohort. It was so nice.

We discussed about the general definition of Assessment, the specification, and the tools of assessment itself. To assess our student is not as easy as I thought before. I do understand in the explanation of what assessment is, the type, and the function. I just knew that assessment is only a result of student’s work and it is served by number of score. Assessment is an important part of our teaching.

I still need to improve my understanding about the tools of assessment. It is because the time limited us to explain about that. I want to know deeper about rubric, and his friends. It is so important to know about that. They are the things that we need to complete our assessment. They help us also to make a good standard of measurement of our students’ work.

No doubt anymore, the class with Ibu Warih was so interesting. We were grouped and we had our own jobdesk In group. My job was as a leader of group. I had to ensure that other part of job did well. We also had a presentation of our finding about the definition of formative and summative assessment. Then, we had an observation toward the two groups of our friend and criticize the differences.

It is important to teacher candidate to understand well the whole thing about assessment. as I stated before, we can’t separate assessment with our teaching. We need to sharpen our assessment tool to make our best assessment. Assessment is not only in the end of lesson. When the process of learning, it also a good time for us as a teacher to assess our students.

My expectation is reached in this session. I got a wide knowledge about assessment. I also learn much about the thing we need as a teacher candidate to prepare our assessment. I also had my chance to observe some questions from the general assessment like ICAS.

I hope, in the next session I can get the more complete and detail about the new knowledge of teaching.

Assessment - Abdul Majid R (2011120053)

It was a guest lecturer who had come in the last meeting. Her name was Ibu Warih, a teacher from Bogor, and we had learnt about assessment. In my opinion, assessment was about grading the students' result of study, but from what we have learnt in the last meeting, assessment was a process of gathering information about students' learning. From all materials that had learnt, the new things that I had learnt was about summative and formative assessment. I didn't know that there were kinds of assessment. I realized that I had received both summative and formative assessment when I was studying in the school, until now.
From all the materials that have I had learnt, I understood clearly about summative and formative assessment, because I got both formative and summative assessment. Formative assessment was assessment that the teacher did for knowing the students' growth in learning process. I mean that this assessment did on going by teacher. An example from this assessment such routines assessment.  Summative assessment was assessment that teacher did in the end of time in learning. I mean that this assessment was usually given by report such in the end of semester.
I did not really understand about how our assessment could to be effective for the students. I also took a note from lecturer's explanation, that the assessment could be effective if it was not only did once, it was also done by using a variety methods and formats. I just got a little from the explanation, and maybe I need to know and understand about that. I had to learn more about how our assessment could be effective, because it was important for me as a teacher candidate, and effective teacher was very important for all teachers.
The last meeting was exciting, because it was designed interestingly. Although I got explanation from the lecturer, I also learnt from our friends. I learnt not only with friends of my class, I also learnt with friends of other classes.
I thought the subject in last meeting was very important for me as a teacher candidate. We as teacher candidate had to assess our students later. If we did not know how to assess our students equally and fairly, it would be a problem for us as teachers. Teacher should be wise, by being wise the teacher could think wisely too, and could to give an assessment wisely.
The last meeting met my expectation, I expected that the last meeting and guest lecturer was usually interesting and meaningful. I also expected that I would learn about assessment and how to assess our students. I expected that we would learn about the various types of assessment that could be applied in the learning activity, of course could be effective.

Reflection of PETA Guest Lecturer

The previous session of PETA, there was guest lecturer which I knew she is Ibu Warih. What I have learnt in that session is about assessment. There are two kinds of assessment, Summative Assessment and Formative Assessment. Summative assessment aims to give teachers and students a clear insight into students’ understanding. Formative assessment aims to promote learning by giving regular and frequent feedback. Those mentioned above are based on the handout from the lecturer that I tried to understand well.

There is new thing that I have learnt that day. There is another kind of assessment which are Traditional Assessment and Alternative Assessment. Traditional assessment includes paper and pencil test, then alternative assessment includes portfolio, journal, performance, and exhibition. I thought they are the same, there is no divided, but now I know.

From what I have learnt that day, I have understood clearly the base difference between summative and formative assessment. It depends on the “time”, when the teacher assesses students. Summative assessment, I assume from its name, summary, so that summative assessment happens in the end of the lesson. In contrast, formative assessment is up to the teacher when will do it. Teacher may assess student during the lesson. Thus my understanding from my thinking, but actually I have not understood completely about the basic meaning of them. Once my group asked the lecturer, but she said that it was already clear then she continued the lesson. I will ask others about this misunderstanding especially to them who had followed the course since the beginning, because I missed it.

Overall, I think this session was interesting because it was joint class with English Department 2012 cohort. We could share each other about our opinion, and the most important thing is I was not bored because I met various faces, not the same cohort anymore. I think what I have learnt on that day is meaningful to me as a teacher candidate because I could apply those kinds of assessment into my class in the future. I could choose which one of the assessments will be good for my class, some day. I think this session meets my expectation because I could study with the new lecturer, new friends, new atmosphere, and so many. What I expect for the next session is the guest lecturer will share the material like the power point, because we have handout only and it is not enough.

The forth Reflection (guest lecturer) Mahgda Melita

In the fourth meeting of PETA course, we had a guest lecturer from Bogor, her name is Bu Warih. I learned about class assessment in this session. Actually this is something new for me, because I never learn about this thing before. I learn about Effective Assessment, there are two kinds of effective assessment, there are Summative and Formative Assessment. Summative Assessment is assessment that teacher gives in the end of the learning and Formative Assessment is assessment that teacher does along the learning process.

I really understood about summative assessment, actually this kind of assessment can assess several elements simultaneously: it informs and improves student learning and the teaching process. So it will help teacher to know how deep the students understand about the lesson in the end of the learning process, it also help teacher to prepare the next step of the learning because teacher can see the real demonstration of the learning result from the students by measuring understanding of the central idea, and prompts students towards action.

In this session I learn many new thing, but over all I can understand all the material. May be just find some difficulties about how to differentiate the summative and formative assessment, but I will learn more about it by reading the material and search another resources to help me to find out the differences and help me to understand more.

I really get an interesting learning experience today, because the session run well and the lecturer can manage the class well, so all of the students fell interested to join the class. The way the lecturer explain the material also easy to understand, she also create the learning process become an active learning class. She stimulates us to find out more by our self, so it practices our critical thinking.

I think what I got today, is really meaningful for me as teacher candidate. Today lesson was helpful for me, because in the future I can use what I get today in my class, I can use this to assess my student and as the introspection tool for me as the teacher to assess how deep my students understand my lesson, and how the way I prepare the next stage of my teaching.Today Session is as what I expect, I hope I get new thing that will be useful for me as teacher candidate.

Reflective Journal of General Lecturing

On the last session, PETA was delivered by a guest lecturer, Ibu Warih Wijayanti. It was really nice to meet her. I was lucky then. I knew that Ibu Warih is the best teacher in Madaniyah School. Here, I learned about Assessment. I got a lot of new things. It meant about the new experiences, too. Based on what I got, assessment is a kind of tools to assess the students. Assessment is also divided into two, summative and formative. They are really new things for me. But then, now, I know the differences and similarities between them.
I really understood about summative and formative assessment. Summative has the high value and low feedbacks possibility. It is really opposite with formative. Feedbacks are the most important parts in formative.. I did not have a difficult part to understand. I mean that I really understood with Ibu Warih’s explanation. The explanation is really clear. Maybe, I just felt difficult with the time. The time was really limited. I love her way to explain.
Actually, that session was really interesting. I could study together with 2012 cohort. It was really an interesting experience. I could learn from my juniors. Then, they also could learn from my cohort. The other interesting thing is, I could meet a great lecturer as the guest lecturer. I was really happy to meet her. She was so calm. Her explanation was so clear. She is a good lecturer.
This session was really meaningful as a teacher candidate. After this session, I know how to give assessments to my students someday. At least, I know which parts that I want to consider to my students. I know that assessment is not only about homework. I know that I also have a chance to give my students a chance to revise their works by giving them feedbacks of their works. I know that to be a teacher must not be rigid. I also have to use my heart.
This session was really out of my expectation. It was over of my expectation. I could learn a lot of things. I could enjoy the learning. I loved every parts of learning. I was not regret to come to the general lecturing. My expectation for the next meeting is, I can learn new things again. Maybe, there will be a guest lecturer again and as good as Ibu Warih or even more.

4th Reflective Journal

We had a guest lecturer, Bu Warih for the last meeting in PETA course. We were talking about assessment. With her I have learned about what is assessment, the two kinds of assessment which is a new thing for me; formative and summative and how we do it effectively.
From what I have learned, assessment is a tool to gather students’ information in learning process. To do the effective assessment, as a teacher we have to be objective, do not assess students “snapshotly” but with different methods and format to get to know our students inside-out. There are also two kinds of assessment; formative and summative. Formative assessment is an assessment that we do during the learning process, the purpose is to assess or guide students’ progress in learning. Summative assessment is an assessment that we do at the end of the learning process, the purpose is to assess students’ understanding about the lesson.
Fortunately, there is no part that I have not understood yet in the last meeting’s session. Except for the technical thing of how we make the assessment itself.
Last meeting’s session was also interesting because it was the first time I learned together with 2012 cohort in group. It was Hendra “Ariel” in my group. He was cooperative and smart enough. At first, Indri, Erma and I made him the group leader, but when we knew that he had a good hand-writing, so we made him as the recorder of the group. It seemed like there was no leader in our group, because we did everything together.
The things that I have learned in the last meeting’s session are meaningful for me as a teacher candidate because an effectiveness whether in teaching or assessing students are related and very important. The effective assessment allow students to learn with their different multiple intelligences and learning styles which means I have to be an effective teacher who creative in providing various teaching methods and know what students need in their learning process.
I met my expectation in the last meeting’s session because now I know what assessment is, the models and tools of assessments and how I do it effectively.
I expect in the next session I will review the same topic with Ms. Ine, maybe she wants to add several things if there is something left behind from Bu Warih’s explanation. In the next session, I will also perform a role-play from the lesson plan that Syaifur, Yuttie and I have made. I hope I can do my best!

Erma Agus S - Reflection (Assessment)

In the fourth meeting, I learned about assessment. There was a general course with guest lecturer at that time. Before coming to the class, there was a grouping arrangement. The group was combined from section H, G, and from 2012 cohort. I thought it would be interesting if we learned the course in a group like that. I thought it would be more fun and understandable. When coming to the class, I expected a lot of things related to effective assessment. I expected the kinds of assessment that will suit and good for our students. Honestly, I am not a person who really care of assessment method that will be effective. Previously, I simply thought that I should more focus on the content and pedagogy in teaching. However, now I understand that I should also pay attention to the assessment since it is also important to know. Assessment itself can be used for various things, it can be used to measure our students understanding, and it also can be a method of evaluation for us as a teacher whether our teaching already effective or not.
From the course, I learned that there is summative assessment and formative assessment. Based on my understanding, summative assessment is the assessment that based on content. It could be done to really measure our students understanding. This kind of assessment is really good to be done by teacher. This assessment can be done every end of one topic or material that being discussed. The second assessment is more to reflection method. This is the assessment that used to push our students to learn more and to know the attitude of our students toward our teaching method.
However, I did not really understand about strategies of assessment. I feel confuse because it seems like the lecturer feel a bit worry because of the time factor. It made me a little bit hard to catch the content of the assessment.
I think, the previous session was quite interesting because we work in group. Group work always made me curious on what to do because it must be interesting and fun. However, there are some times when I still feel sleepy because the lecturer’s voice is too soft and slow. It made me a little bit boring and sleepy. I hope I could learn more about the assessment because I want to make myself realize that I should not only pay attention to the main activity of teaching but also how to measure my students’ understanding with effective assessment.

Fourth Reflection of PETA

Geby Devtiana Maryono
2011120001

In the last meeting of PETA, there was a guest lecturer from Madaniah Senior High School. Her name is Ibu Warih. She taught about Effective Assessment. In the class there were some groups, and I learnt in group one with Sinta, Ponco and Mustika. Before entering the class, I have read the handout, but I still did not really understand about the materi.
In class, Ibu Warih explained to us what effective assessment is. After the explanation, I understand that assessment is different with judgment. In assessment there is the process when assessing the students, but in judgment there is only judging based on the prior knowledge and appearance. According to Woolfolk, assessment is a process of gathering information about students’ learning. Assessment is one of the important aspects in learning process. Assessment is needed to provide feedback on learning process and designed to inform practice.
I think it is not easy to assess the students, because the teacher must give the effective assessment. According to Wiggins and Mc Tighe, effective assessment is like a scrapbook than a single shot. It means that the teacher has to assess the students based on the whole process in learning (along the way) using a variety of formats and methods. Matching the type of the assessment and the needed of achieving the desired results is also important. Effective assessment will allow students to share and demonstrate their understanding by using a variety of learning styles. Besides, effective assessment also allows teachers to plan to response, inform every stage of learning and develop teachers’ performance.
There are two kinds of assessment. They are summative assessment and formative assessment. There are some differences between both assessments. For summative assessment, it is for at the end of the learning process (semester or a year) and the assessment given in scores or report. In formative assessment, the assessment is along the way (in learning process) and it is not merely the scores.
Those are the things that I understand clearly from the last meeting. Besides, there are also some things that I don’t understand. I still don’t understand about the strategies in assessment, because Bu Warih did not explain clearly because of the limited time. I have tried to read the handout about this, but I still do not understand, and need the clear explanation for this, especially for open-ended task.
I think the last meeting was quite interesting, because we learnt in group. Working in group made me not feel sleepy. After the group work, we had the gallery walk. Unfortunately, because the time was not enough, we could only see the flipchart without a person stayed to explain the flipchart. I think the last meeting’s material is really useful for me if I become the teacher someday. I know that assessment is not an easy thing for the teacher, because assessing is not only about giving the score, but also how we assess the students effectively by using the strategies methods.
The last meeting fulfilled my expectation, because the explanation from Ibu Warih was clear enough, and Bu Warih always approaches us to ask and explain the things that we still do not understand. I hope, next meeting Ibu Ine can give a brief explanation about the assessment strategies. Thus, I can understand more about how to conduct the effective assessment.
