Erma Agus Setiyaningsih - Reflection PETA 2

In the second meeting of PETA, we learned about Thematic Learning. First, we watched a video about a teacher in elementary school who teaches her students about environment. Inside the theme environment, the teacher can teaches more than one subject which are kinds of plants, family tree, and counting from one to ten. From the way the teacher teaches, thematic learning consists of various ways to teach more than one subject. From the idea of those three principles, I think it will be effective to be used in learning because the teaching method will not only consist of long explanation from teacher but comes from various ways that can make the lesson more interesting.
However, those various methods way that can be used is also depend on the teachers’ ability to grab and liven up the class atmosphere. It will be just same if the teacher fails to grab the students’ attention. Thus, it is the hardest part of being effective teacher. We may be able to search and learn many type of learning, but we must be able to apply it well so that we can make our lesson effective and be like what we have expected. In the video, when comes to part of story telling, the teachers cannot liven up the atmosphere so that some of the students are not interested and get sleepy in the class. This is the challenge for us to keep developing our method of teaching as a teacher. I realize that being a teacher is not simple. It is not enough if we just learning through theory and just simply follow the theory without developing our own style. I do not know very much about thematic learning because honestly, I never got any thematic learning when I am in elementary school or in the higher grade. So, I cannot really judge whether it is effective or not. However, I think all methods have their strength and weaknesses so it really depends on how we use it.
In group discussion that held by our lecture, we should analyze some cases of teacher’s methodology in giving instruction in class. Again, being effective is not only because we have the basic knowledge to be one of them. We need to engage more to the our learning environment. There might be misunderstanding happen between even the clear instruction to the students’ response toward it. So, we must pay extra attention on engagement with students so that our instruction can be understood well by our students. It is not easy to be effective teacher. So, we need to keep learning to make our teaching effective.

  1. yes Erma I am agree with you. Being an effective teacher is not easy, and I have some problem too.when the teacher didnt answer the student question and she less to encourage of her student.
the engagement in learning process is also crucial for our students understanding of the lesson. the most important is we have to study much theory and can choose the best theory for our class right?

  3. Yes, you’re right. The first thing that we should do is giving instruction clearly, so the students didn’t misunderstanding about what should they do. I hope we can be an effective teacher, although it is not easy.
