Mamal's 2nd Reflective Journal of PETA



            In the second meeting of PETA my class mates and I watched the video of Thematic Teaching simulation in the class. The simulation is in elementary level. That video showed us the example of thematic teaching by showing us the combination subject in one meeting. The teacher divides the students into groups. She (the teacher is woman) opens the class by greeting and asks the information about students’ condition. Then students can learn three different subjects, they are science, math, and society. The class felt so alive and attractive.
            What can I learned from that video is that thematic way is one of the effective teaching processes to be applied in the class. However, I think I still can found the weaknesses in that video simulation of thematic. First the teacher does not ask the students to work in group or ask them to make any discussion. The teacher also ignores the students question, so the leaning process is one way learning and teacher centered. In my opinion the simulation like in that video is appropriate for the same level with that video which are third grade of elementary school and under. However, I still wonder if thematic is appropriate for every grade in school or even for university level.
            After watching the video, we were divided into 4 groups, and then the lecturer gave us a piece of paper for each group which contains the case of learning process. We had to give our opinions, solution, and the additional effective ways if we think it is necessary. In every group, there is the different case. The cases are the common problem that teachers or students often face. So, we learned how find the best way in facing those kind of problems. The decisions, the hard works, the preparations and anything else should be considered by us the future educator.
