1st E-Reflection Session 1 - Buyung A. N. Sudrajat

        After attending first session of Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment course, I learned many things and got many inspirations throughout the lesson. For the first the lecturer, Ms. Ine opened with introduction and sharing session about our last holiday. After that, we discussed about course objective, schedule, and assessment. After knowing that, I have something in my mind about what I want to get from this course that is I want to learn about how to conduct effective teaching and give good assessment.

           The next activity was discussion session about inspirational teacher and not really inspirational teacher that we ever had. From this discussion I learned many things from my friend’s experiences with their teachers, both the inspirational and not really inspirational. I learned that there are many things that can make teacher become inspiration for their students. There are two points that I underlined about becoming inspirational teacher. First is about teacher’s attitude. Teacher is a role model for their students, so teacher should have good attitudes. One of my teachers that inspired me has very good attitudes. She is very kind and care to their students. Second is about the way teacher taught. Most of us agree that our inspirational teachers have good way and well prepared, so they can give the lesson well.

            After the discussion session I also learned that every teacher is inspiring. Although, there are some not really inspirational teachers that I ever had, but it can make me reflect that in the future I do not want to become like them. The next activity was group discussion about what an effective teacher is and what elements that should be had to become effective teacher are. From the group discussion and looking to others group discussion result, I can say that there are several categories to be an effective teacher those are appearance, preparation, conducting the lesson, and assessing the students.

            First category to become an effective teacher is appearance. It is important aspects because most of student will get their first impression about the teacher from appearance. Teacher should know how to dress neatly and good looking. It does not mean that teacher should wear beautiful or expensive clothes. As long it is tidy and appropriate, it is enough. In addition teacher also should pay attention on body smell and hair style. Second category is preparation. An effective teacher should prepare the lesson well. It is started with make good lesson plan based on the materials. A good lesson plan that should be prepared is a lesson plan that can cover all the materials and include many activities that make students actively learn.

            The third category is how to conduct the lesson. It is also important thing should be considered. A good lesson plan will not good anymore if the implementation and conducting process in the classroom do not run well. This category asks an effective teacher to have a lot of knowledge about conducting a lesson, manage the classroom and many other things. That is what I want to learn from this course. The last but not least category is about assessing students’ result. An effective teacher should know how to give good assessment and evaluation, so the students will know how far they have learned and which part that they should learn more.

            In my opinion this session has met my expectation about what the overview of the course, the course objective, and course assessment. In the next session I want to know more about instruction planning. I did really enjoy the first meeting and I hope so for the next meeting. Thank you
