Second Reflection_Dina Fauziah (Ayyash)


    Education is one of the way to educate, to learn, and to improve our ability. Being a teacher has to implement what we learn about education. In this second meeting of PETA, we learn about implementation of  “tematik”. “Thematic” is one of the way to deliver one material related with any kinds of material. In that kind video, which I watched in the second meeting. My friends and I watched about how to deliver a material which related another material such as counting in mathematic combinate with learning about “rambutan” fruit.

     The teacher in that video was explaining about rambutan. The characteristic of that kind fruit, analyzing rambutan, and counting how much rambutan which students get. The teacher gives the chance to the students to find out the rambutan outside the class. The students were directed by the teacher, identifying the rambutan together . The colour of Rambutan. The students seem very enthusiastic when they can touch rambutan directly outside the class. After that, they back to the class. The teacher tried to make a good understanding about the rambutan itself. The weakness of the teacher, she does not manage the class well. The students already grouping but she doesn’t take the advantages from that kind sitting management. The teacher should be able to involve all the student in learning process not only focus on some students.

    In short, based on the video, I can conclude that when we use thematic method we can not explore deeper the material. The student only learn the material briefly. This method good only for reviewing the material.

    Using thematic method also has two sides. The advantage from that we can serve a relax learning because the teacher should not force the student to be master in the material and we can related one each other of the material, but disadvantage from this, the students can not go deeper the material. The key point is from a teacher to learn more and more how to be an effective teacher for the students based on the real context which is student needs.

Thematic

            Thematic was a method that combined some subjects which has related topic to become one. In the second meeting of PETA course, my lecture showed us a short movie. That movie was contained of thematic method. That movie was from department of education in Indonesia. In that movie, there was a teacher that was using thematic to teach her class. She taught in elementary school. The topic was about environment. She tried to relate some subject that related with the topic. She tried to related Mathematic, Penjaskes, Pkn, IPA etc. The role was like this, the first she opened the class. Then, she began the lesson by explaining a tree. From The tree, she related the parts of tree with the members of family. After that, she guided the students to go to the garden. In the garden, she pointed a Rambutan tree. She made clear what the tree was and explained the parts of that tree. There, the students could touch and saw the real tree. That was a good method, the students did not only know the theory but they know the real shape of tree. She also told and asked them about colour. What colour of that leaf was. What colour of the fruit was. After that she guided them to come back to the school. Before coming back, she asked them to pick some Rambutan fruits. In the class they were sitting in a group arrangement. In the class, she pointed some of students to count their Rambutan fruits. After all, she told them about an educational story behind Rambutan fruit. A story was about how to consume Rambutan fruit. In that story, there were some boys who ate Rambutan fruits before had breakfast and they got stomachache after eating Rambutan. That was a good story to remind the student not to eat Rambutan fruits before eating.
            From that case, I got a lot new knowledge how to teach. We could use thematic method to teach the students. That method has many beneficial. First, we could combined some subjects become one. It would economize the time for teaching. It would increase teacher’s creativity to relate a topic with other topics. The students might be more interesting with the lesson because they could study some lesson in one topic through thematic method. From the case above, we could see that thematic was useful method. Through thematic method, students could learn colour, environment (Rambutan’s tree), mathematic (calculating the fruits), family, storytelling and Penjaskes (health).
            After we watched movie, my lecture grouped us become five groups. She asked us to analyze that movie. We had to list what were the effective things on that movie and what were the things should be improved. We also had to list the things that would we do if we were in that condition. We discussed around for 20 minutes. After that we shared the outcome from my group. We shared and giving response to each other. We thought that thematic was effective enough because using thematic in teaching had many benefits. I do hope, after I learned in second meeting of PETA course I can increase my capability and can be a creative teacher in using method to teach.

Reflection journal
            This week I got more knowledge about teaching world. I really appreciate to the lecturer because she gave good video that can be learned by us. Here I could learn more about how the teacher in the class room has to be. As I know, when I was a student I only think about teacher in my school who really strict and cruel. But there was some of cool and good teacher in teaching.
            This week I learn about thematic learning process in the classroom. It about how the way we give material by combining some of the lesson to be a theme. From the video I can learn how the teacher has to creative to engage the students in teaching. There is a video that could be our example in learning about that. We were divided into some groups. Then we discussed about thematic. From the video we know we have to be creative teacher.

Umamah Umais 2nd reflection


The 2nd meeting of PETA was talking about thematic teaching. I am familiar with thematic before I learned in the class, because I have a young brother that he is in first grade in elementary school. Every night, I have to teach my brother with thematic teaching, because in his school his teacher was teaching with thematic to my brother and students. I think thematic is so good for elementary students, because they will study math, bahasa Indonesia, social and science together. The students cannot be confuse what they have learn. When I was watching video in class, I thought, the activities in video was a little bit difference. I could not see clearly what the relation between one course to another course. After I watched the video, me and my group were discussing how to teach effectively in thematic teaching, what will we do with different way, what we want to improve? 
The next activities, Ms Ine gave me and my group a case. After I read the problem, I got trouble to understand the case. I know that there was a teacher who reflected her story when she was in junior high school. My understanding is she was good in memorize, but she was not good to understand the material, however she was in high rank in her class, she was very embracing if other students who did not care about the lesson got the higher score than her. That was my understanding. When Ms Ine asked my group to answer and give a solution, I got confused because my understanding is so different with Ms Ine's understanding. This week is first week of SEP and now I really know it is very hard to teach student effectively and to be effective teacher.  

Second E-Reflection: Yunira Noor Rachmah



         The next meeting, I learn about thematic learning. We watched the video together and analyzed the effective and the ineffectiveness of thematic learning. It is my first time to hear thematic learning. I have already known about thematic learning. Thematic learning is integrated some of subjects into one subject in once meeting. I think, this is a new subject in education. 

           Based on the video, I got the effective and the ineffectiveness of thematic learning. The effectiveness of thematic learning has 4 things. There are students could learn multi-subjects in one time; it could increase students’ motivation both intrinsic and extrinsic; the students could feel real learning experience that using the real thing; and encourage the students’ communication and presentation skills. Whereas the ineffectiveness of thematic learning has 3 things. There are the teacher still using teacher-centered learning; lack of classroom management; and no ground rule set up before learning. 

           If I were the teacher like on the video, I will teach this subject differently. The first step, I will set up the rules in the classroom. The rules are the students can answer the teacher’s question if the teacher have chose one student; the teacher and the students must respect each other; etc. The second step, the teacher create physical activity or use Total Physical Response. The third step, the teacher could increase the students’ interaction through collaborative learning. Actually, the teacher could approach many methods in  thematic learning. Before the teacher using that methods, the teacher must know well about that.

2nd Meeting Reflection by Yulia Sari R.



In the previous meeting in PETA course, I learned about Thematic learning. It was the first time I hear about that kind of learning. I did not know what it is until Ms. Ine played the video about Thematic learning.
The video was interesting. The loud voice of the teacher was so funny, but I like her spirit, so the students will always pay attention to her. From the video, I got that Thematic learning is the method where teacher delivers the materials of several subjects all at once with one theme. I have never found that kind of method, it is a new thing for me.
After watched the video, I discussed with my group whether the Thematic learning is effective or not. The discussion with my group was fun, though I was so sleepy. It was me, Novi, Ayas, Muiz and Mumu, and we had different opinions. I thought that Thematic learning is effective, besides it can save the time, the materials are also authentic. I found that we had different perspective. Novi said that Thematic learning is not effective, because there is no deeper explanation about the topic. It is true, then I think that Thematic learning is suitable for evaluation in the end of the lesson. Based on our discussion, Thematic learning is also not appropriate in higher level of education, because in that level the difficulties, several topics cannot be gathered at once.
Next discussion was talking about cases in effectiveness of other learning method. There were unique cases we got. My group got the case which all subjects are talking about the same topic, apple, for two weeks in a row. We discussed that, that kind of learning is not effective, because it is monotone so students will get bored with it and the goal is unclear. We also talked about how we supposed to do to make it effective.
From the whole-class discussion, I learned that as teachers effectiveness is really important. I think the effectiveness makes us creative in teaching. Now I know various case of effective and ineffective teaching, I cannot wait to apply it in this SEP.

Reflection Week 2

At the second session of PETA meeting I learnt about tematik teaching system. Tematik teaching system, is a teaching system that combine every subjects in the school and combine it into one topic (theme).

                First, Mrs Ine showed us a video that describe how the tematik learning system is applied in elementary school. The theme is about family and fruits. In this learning they learn about Indonesian language, science, and also math. In the lesson, the students are given authentic material, in order to increase their understanding. In my opinion, this tematik learning system is interesting and also make the student easier to understand the subject. Moreover by giving the student the authentic material and example,the student will feel that the knowledge that they get are used in daily life. They will think that, and that perception will increase student interest in learning.

After we watched the video, Ms Ine then divided us into some groups, and then we discuss about the effectiveness of the tematik learning system. This activity is quite interesting because it sharpen our skill and sense in observing the teaching learning condition which later will  be used in SEP program. Besides that, in this discussion I got many ideas from my friends in creating effective way of teaching. For example, like changing the ordinary story telling activity into story creation activity, introducing color and family by using description, and etc.

Overall the second session learning in PETA was interesting. So many knowledge, inspiration, and also ideas that I get. From my lecturer, from the video, and also from my friends that discuss in the class. I really hope that in next meeting the lesson will be more awesome and meaningful.

A Missing Meeting

In this session, I was not in the classroom. I missed this important meeting since I had to go to St.Theresia High School for School Experience Program (SEP).
I just guessed some points that was discussed in this session it is about how to teach effectively because before we join the class the lecturer asked the students to read a paper   “Effective Teacher”. I also heard from some friends that the class discussed a video that contain type of teaching method which is called “thematic”.  I remember when I was in Senior High School there was a term called thematic map. When I heard the topic of the video is about “thematic”, some points came up into mind. In geographic field, thematic map is special map for certain use of it and I thought it is the same with thematic in teaching. I really curious with the video, I think I should watch the video first and I can summarize something from it. My friends said that thematic is about teaching not from the materials but from the theme that is taught. They also told me that before the teacher teaches in the classroom, the teacher should plan the instruction and I thought that preparation is everything in this case.
There are still a lot of things that I really want to know and explore from this session. I really hope I am not missing too much things and I have to motivate myself to try exploring more about teaching.
I cannot write many things here since I did not join the class. Hopefully, it was the first and the last time for me for missing this important subject. Through this missing meeting also I learned to be mature, to improve myself as the true university student who is independent.

Febriyani Khasanah – 2nd Reflection


The learning activity will not effective if stimulus which is giving from one side is not get response from the other side. This kind of situation is same with teacher centered learning that usually use in a lot of school in Indonesia. In teacher centered model, the teacher still dominate in every activity in the class. In my opinion that situation is not effective, because with this model of learning, the students will feel bored and saturated. To make learning activity in the class more effective, it is needed awareness from the teacher to use the appropriate model of teaching and learning.
According from what I got in PETA subject, do something different to make learning activity more effective is needed or perhaps have to do for every teacher. Some kind of giving motivation through commendation and reward is example of encouragement for students. It has relation with effective learning. Because, if the teacher succeed encouraging the student motivation, it is indicate that the response and stimulus are goes in two ways. So the effective learning can be start. The effective learning is cannot separated from the teacher skill’s. Teacher should be creative and innovative in managing class. Besides that, teacher also have to give real teaching learning. For example, teacher can provide real object of fruit as learning media in science.
The importance of effectiveness in teaching and learning process make me motivated to learn more and always do deeper understanding to be good educator in future. I hope I can get the soul of educator in myself, so I can do much effective action for education.

Mustika Hati - 2nd e-reflection PETA


            On the second meeting PETA class, I learned about Thematic Learning. I never heard before about Thematic Learning. Actually it was my first time knows about Thematic Learning. At the first time, I felt little bit confused about what Thematic Learning is. Based on the video and discussion in the class, thematic learning is learning by combining some courses or subjects in a meeting. In the video the teacher teach some subjects that are Mathematics, Bahasa, Agama, IPS and IPA in one meeting. In my opinion, learning activity which is using Thematic system more interesting than usually but this method only appropriate from first grade in Elementary school.
            After we watched the video, we discussed in a group of five to identify the advantages and disadvantages of thematic learning. We also discussed about what we were going to do differently, if we were the teachers. Based on my group discussion we think Thematic Learning is uneffective, because this method used teacher centered, lack of student’s skills exploration, and unmaximal productivity of student. If we were the teacher we will optimalize the function of student’s group, distribute the participation of students better than the video that we already watched, do staffed telling story, etc.
From this session I also learned that there are several elements that must be included when we are planning for instruction. Those elements are the topic or the learning content, the activity, and the assessment. We need to determine those three aspects clearly and linked each other to avoid two mistakes in designing a curriculum. The mistakes are activity only focused on the activity and we just explain the material.
After that, I learnt something about being teacher is not easy as I thought. The teacher should found any interest and attractive method and technique that can make students feel comfortable and easy to learn some new knowledge. I think I have to practice more, read a lot and do a discussion with my friends to increase my understanding about effective teaching. This course really helps me to do the observation during SEP program.  I also want to make SEP program as a good opportunity to add my knowledge and practice to be an effective teacher. I hope that I can get many knowledge and experience through SEP program.


2nd Reflection_Syaifurohman


For the second meeting of PETA class, I learned about Tematic Learning. Actually that was my first experience to learn about that topic. Ms. Ine played video about implementation of Tematic learning. But at that time I was little bit confused when I watched the video. The content of the video showed a teacher that delivered a topic about environment. The topic of the video was about environment, but in that topic there were three points. Those were about family, color, and counting number start from 1 up to 10. But the teacher explanation in the video was very confusing and unsystematic. Teacher just used one way communication and only focus in teacher center learning. The students were not given a chance to speak up or deliver their ideas. The session for the students spoke up just when their teacher asked them to answer the question. There was no discussion session for students.
I think Tematic is a method for teaching the basic level of the students. The appropriate participant of this method is the students of elementary school exactly first grade. My understanding about this method is a kind method for delivering the primer knowledge, so the students that appropriate for this method are the first grade of elementary school. Tematic method is not introduced with the focus course, but it is introduced by the topic. In the topic there are some focus courses such as Sport, Science, and Social course. That was my understanding about Tematic method.
The interesting activity in PETA course yesterday was group discussion. Group discussion was started like usual, I and my friends counted and the same number would be the same group. Ms. Ine gave me and my group a paper that consisted of the problem. The problem was about a woman that joined in a workshop with the theme “understanding”. In that activity a women was expected to write a reflection when she was in Junior high school as a student. The content of the reflection was about her understanding when she learned about the lesson. She was easy to memorize the lesson, but she was difficult to understand about the lesson, so in the last semester she got a bad mark. The other groups’ problem is about the wrong strategy of teacher when they gave the material, so they have to deliver the material to the students as fast as they could. I think only this problem that I still remember from other groups’ problem.
That problem made me confused and at that time I could not answer and gave the solution about the problem. I did have any ideas about the solution and also my group. Honestly I was confused to understanding about that problem. I think that activity was very useful for me as teacher candidate, because I could not predict in my future. Perhaps I will have a student that has some problem with that woman. So as the teacher candidate I have to aware about my students’ condition and students’ needed. For the second problem I think that kind of problem could happen, because the condition of the class that could not support the teacher when they deliver the material. The other prediction was the wrong arrangements of lesson plan. But I could not blame if that problem is pure the teachers’ fault.  
     I think in this session my expectation has been success, because in this session I can share about my ideas. I also can understand about the material in this session. But honestly, I was little bit confused when I try to understand the material of this course. My expectation for the next session, I expect I can understand easily about the material and I can share about my ideas. I think my reflection for this session has been completed. Thank you.  

2nd Reflection PETA : Putri Tiara Ismawaty


            On the second meeting PETA class, I learned about Tematik. I think it was my first time knew more about that material through a learning video. I ever heard before about Tematik, but I never know what Tematik itself before Bu Ine showed me the video in the class. At the first time, I felt so curious when the video was showed because I think learning activity which is using Tematik system more interesting than usually. Besides, there is no specific subject in learning but combining the material becomes a theme of the day.
            After I watched and discussed with my friends about the video, I doubt whether Tematik system can be used in the advance classes such as in 4-6th grade elementary school or in the higher level school. That because in the video, Tematik is used in the beginner class I think that was in the 1st grade elementary school.
            If Tematik system is related to effective teaching, I think it can be effective to the teacher when delivers the material. That is caused in Tematik, students can learn more about the material through the theme. In contrary, it can be problem for the advance classes because they need more specific knowledge in learning. I think if Tematik is applied in advance classes, it will be not effective because students have to learn more before the class and should have more prior knowledge. Perhaps, there will be some of the students who know and some of them do not know.
            Based on my explanation, I reflect that Tematik is good if teacher can modify and delivers theme of the material as good as possible. It can be happen if the teacher is creative and has capability to manage the class because Tematik needs teacher who can facilitate the students. For me as candidate of educator, I agree with Tematik but I think it can be better if it is applied in the level of class that appropriate. Besides, I think become effective or no it depends on the teacher when explains also delivers the material. That because, as I wrote before that become a teacher should have good attitude and personality. It refers to the video that teacher has to respect, patient, and also creative in order to can be understood by the students. So that, in the second meeting PETA class I am more learn again about effective teaching and also indirectly how to be effective teacher. Hopefully, I also can be an effective teacher when I teach in the future.
