Sixth E-Reflection

Sixth E-Reflection

I have written my sixth e-reflection but I haven’t published it to class blog. When I want to publish my sixth e-reflection, I can’t find the document and I re-write this sixth e-reflection. Maybe this is my fault because I might be a procrastinator and this is my karma
.
I remembered in that day, we did reflection about our micro-teaching, discussed differentiated instruction, multiple intelligence, and Bloom’s taxonomy. I will write the reflection about our micro-teaching. Miss Ine gave us feedback about our micro-teaching for each groups and each groups must give feedback also for the others and reflect what their feeling about this micro-teaching. Miss Ine said that the rubric that has given to us will be the rubric or reference for our final-term examination is micro-teaching. I felt in this micro-teaching  I was still nervous and I could not manage it. In final-term examination, I will try to manage my nervous and I will do my best. The feedback from Miss Ine and other groups are very useful for me.

Multiple intelligence have discussed previously in the other courses. Multiple intelligence divided into 8 intelligence, there are verbal-linguistic; logical-mathematic; visual-spatial; musical-rhythmic; bodily-kinesthetic; interpersonal; intrapersonal; and naturalist. Everyone can have all of the eight intelligence, but some intelligence can be more dominant than others. Besides that, we can develop our weakness intelligence become be stronger. In the other hand, multiple intelligence are someone that has well at. It will relate with differentiated instruction. It is because every student has their own needs for learning. The teacher also must know how to apply differentiated instruction in the classroom and the diversity elements to be considered by a teacher. The diversity elements such as cognitive abilities, learning styles, socioeconomic and family factors, readiness, learning pace, gender influences, cultural/ ethnic influences, personal values on learning and confidence in learning. Bloom’s taxonomy determines the stage of difficulty of instruction and assessment. It contains of six cognitive processes. There are remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluation, and creating.

After I re-writing this e-reflection, I feel little bit confuse in Bloom’s taxonomy. For solving my confusion, I will ask my friend to more discuss about Bloom’s taxonomy. This is very interesting and useful for me as a teacher candidate. Later, I will face the students with variety of their students’ need, learning style, and multiple intelligence. I also have known the knowledge about it and I must solve it in a good way. I am so sorry for Miss Ine because I posted it too late so I makes you to be disturb to assess my score. Thank you for you still care to me until now.

Seventh E-Reflection

Reflection about the Role of Assessment in Supporting Teaching and Learning
Actually, I did not come to this meeting that discussed about the role of assessment in supporting teaching and learning. I still have one e-reflection that I must do and submit this task in class blog. I asked to myself “What should I do for fulfilling this e-reflection?“ and I read my friends e-reflection from Nurawati Mina and Yulia Sari Riyanti. After that, I read also the material in Moodle that I have copied before to be my own document. I think, this topic has explained from the guest lecturer and this is my understanding about this topic.
I will start this e-reflection with the definition of assessment. In my opinion, assessment is a collection and process of gathering the information about students’ learning. The teachers can make judgments of students’ learning and how to develop classroom activity that will improve students’ learning. The teachers can reach it easily, if they have fulfilled the elements of classroom assessment. The elements of classroom assessment are purpose, measurement, evaluation, and use with three ways such as diagnosis, grading, and instruction. Domains of classroom assessment are cognitive (knowledge), affective (attitude), and psychomotor (skills).
It discussed also about models of assessment such as conventional model and standard-based model. Conventional model is the teacher makes plan an instructional unit about knowledge and skills and holds the test for students to know what they have learnt, then, the teacher assigns grades for them based on the test and move to next instructional unit. Standard-based model has the different things with conventional model. The steps between conventional and standard-based model are the same. The different things are (1) the teacher uses a variety of strategies that adapts with students’ need and learning styles; (2) the teacher gives more practice to students; (3) the teacher provides feedback whether students have and have not understood the materials. After the teacher providing feedback, the teacher can move on to the next instructional unit and must make plan for the next instructional unit with new ideas and concepts. The feedback have provided by the teacher that will influence students’ motivation and goals such as ego involvement, extrinsic motivation and task involvement.
I did not know whether in that day activities were interesting or not because I have said it before that I did not come to the classroom in that day. I feel so regret and I have missed many things and knowledge that is very useful for me as the teacher/ educator candidate. The part that I still get confuse is about domains of classroom assessment and influencing students’ motivation and goals from the feedback. There are parts of material that I still confuse and I will solve it with asking my friends to explain. Besides that, I hope also it will be explained again with Miss Ine in the next meeting. Thank you so much for Miss Ine that have taught me many things and given me much knowledge. Thank you also for Nurawati Mina and Yulia Sari Riyanti as my references for this e-reflection.

Role of Assessment in Supporting Teaching and Learning

In this session, we learned more about what is the real assessment and also its function and how important it for assessing our students. Like usual my lecturer divided us became some group. There, every group had their own duty. For the example was like explore more about the explanation about assessment. From that meeting I got clear meaning between assessment and evaluation. First is assessment, a group there give explanation that assessment is collecting and interpreting all information about students. After that the teacher could get the authentic result of the students’ ability. Then about evaluation, this is about collecting data without analyzing. From this I got a result that assessment is wider than evaluation.
There was also element of classroom assessment. The steps were purposeà measurementàevaluationàuseà diagnosis, grading & instruction. Then about domain of classroom assessment there are cognitive, affective and psychomotor.
Model of instruction & assessment was interesting and confusing enough for me. We talked about conventional model; there is also some step that is use in that model. The second is standards-based model, actually both of the models have the same aim in getting result of students.
If we talk about assessment we are going to find purposed and also process of assessment. Besides that, we are going to learn about effect of class room based assessment on students and influencing motivation through instruction and assessment too.
From that day I begin to learn how important assessment is…. I have to learn more about it and I have to be able to apply it in my future when I am an Educator.

The Role of Assessment in Teaching and Learning Process

That was the seventh meeting in PETA course. On that day, I learned about the role of assessment in teaching and learning process. Actually, I have learned that topic in other chance. I learned that topic with Ibu Warih in general course of PETA subject. It was lucky for me because on that chance, I could learn same topic twice in one subject that make me get deeper understanding on that topic. Based on my understanding, Assessment was a tool to measure students’ understanding. Assessment also could be a tool to label students’ knowledge or understanding to improve teaching and learning process. There are three functions of assessment. The first was to diagnose the problem in learning process. The second was to grade the score or students’ achievement, and the third was to improve learning process.  A good assessment should have three main criteria. Those were valid, reliable, and objective. There were some steps to assess the students during the class activities. The first was pre-instruction (planning and designing the assessment), second was during the instruction (providing feedback during the assessment) and the last was post-instruction (evaluating the process to improve the teaching and learning process).

On that day, although I could understand some parts of that topic but, I also miss some others parts. I could not understand the whole material. I missed some explanation from my lecturer. I still did not understand about the models of assessment. I knew that there were two models of assessment. Those were conventional model and standard based assessment. I did not really clear about those two things. What I remembered about those two things was both of them had the same function. Both of them also had similar ways. The ways were; the teacher designed or planned the instructional unit by determining the knowledge and skills that students should be able to learn. After that teacher do the teaching and learning process. The next way was in order to know what students have learned, so the teacher assessed the students by testing the students with particular test. I still did not really believe with my explanation about the models of assessment above. There was something missing in that explanation. That explanation was only a brief, it should be deeper. That case made me confuse and still felt in doubt about the model of assessment. To make it clear, I would ask about those things to my friends. I also would take a look to my friends’ reflection in class blog if I have been in Jakarta next. Here in my hometown, I got some difficulties to connect to the internet.

For me, that session was interesting enough because there was an activity like jigsaw reading. The lecturer divided us into some groups and asked us to do presentation. After that, in the end of session, my lecturer sum up the material. I also got interesting on the topic that day. The topic was very useful for me as teacher candidate. Assessment was like thermometer for the doctor that could be used to measure the patients’ condition. From that thing, the doctor could know the way to nurse his patients. The doctor would know the next step to take care of his patients. According to me, that session met with my expectation before that we would learn about the role of assessment deeper though I still missed some parts of that topic. My expectation in the next session was I want to learned how to design an affective assessment that could meet three criteria, (valid, reliable and objective).

Reflection of last meeting

In this last meeting, I got a lot of knowledge about assessment. When I heard about “assessment” I could not differenciate between assessment and evaluation. Assessment is a kind of tool for collecting and interpreting all the information about students, which is helpful for the lecturer or teacher in making a fair and objective judgements to improve students’ ability. Evaluation is collecting the data without analysis before. So, assessment is more broader than evaluation. In assessment, there are pre-instruction, during instruction, and after instruction. Those kind of instruction is important in giving feedback for the student.
Teachers need an assessment for measuring student’s progress. That’s why we as a generation of teacher should be  creative in making types of assessment.  We have to make sure the assessment that we give is appropriate and covered our student’s intelligences.

There are some elements about assessment that i already known, such as the elements, model, domain, and the effect of assessment. The effect of assessment have to stimulate student’s motivation in learning. So that, we can give the best feedback for improving our student’s ability.

Based on the Bloom’s Taxonomy, the highest level is about creating something. A good assessment should be motivated the student to make or invent something new.

In conclusion, assessment is a crucial part for teacher and student to improve their ability in learning teaching process. How to measure the student’s progress by giving them an appropriate assessment based on the standard. So that, we can both evaluation our method and techniques for our student.

My Seventh Reflection, About Assessment

An assessment is teachers’ special tool in measuring students’ understanding. In the last session of PETA, I learnt many things about assessment. I felt happy to learn this topic because I think it is so important and will help us in our real world in teaching later.

The first is about the goal of assessment. As stated before, assessment is for measuring students’ understanding. By assessment, we can also measure our ability in explaining the material to our students. When we can serve our material well, one of the sign is our students can catch and good in presenting at the time of assessment.

An assessment needs to consider the term of students variety of intelligencies. So, our creative in providing various type of assessment is a compulsory. We should provide an assessment that accomodates those children multiple intelligencies.

I learnt also about the elements of assessment, the elements, model, domain, and the effect of assessment. I interest about the effect of assessment. As stated in the presentation group before, a good assessment will stimulate the motivation of students. it relates also with the feedback whether from teacher or students itself.
Student will have a higher motivation if the form of assessment engage the creativity and analitycal in the assessment. I also remember about the Bloom’s Taxonomy where the highest level is about creating something. So, I believe that a good assessment also needs to be built in the form of stimulating students to create something.

Assessment doesn’t stop when the time of assessment ends. A good assessment can be used as our tool for analysing the whole process of learning and teaching activity. It relates to the function of assessment as a material of evaluation.

The thing that I still need to improve is about the term of analysing assessment’s result. The result of assessment of course needs to be explored to get the information we need; whether students’ competence or our teaching evaluation.

I hope the next material will be given clearly and in different method as this one.

Seventh Reflection of PETA Class

The last meeting of PETA class in this year, I have learned about assessment. Actually, we have learned about it before with the guest lecturer, but in this meeting we learned more than before. As a teacher, giving assessment is so complicated. There are many things that should be considered. In this meeting, I have learned about the process how to give assessment and what should be considered. I could follow the class well, but there was misunderstanding with my friends’ explanation. So, I should ask and discuss again in the next time. In this session, I felt bored because the activity just discussion and then explained about what we have discussed, so there were limited time to Miss Ine gave explanation. I felt uncomfortable in group interaction model. Actually, this model could deliver the materials well, but I did not enjoy doing this model. For me, I would more understand well from Miss Ine explanation, because I could focus well. I thought that the previous meeting was more effective than this meeting, because Miss Ine gave adding, gave conclusion and have rest time to review the materials.
In this meeting, there were some new things that I could learn. Mostly, I could understand well. The criteria of effective assessment are assessment should be valid, reliable and objective. Valid is the assessment had to be suitable with what we want to assess. Reliable is the scores had to be consistence in every assessment. And then, objective is the assessment received generally or based on standardization. Besides that, I also got new knowledge about differentiation of assessment and evaluation. Assessment is wider than evaluation, in the assessment there are processes, diagnosis, and prepare learning process and what should prepared for learning in the next time. Evaluation is process to collect information and judgment. Actually, it could help me to understand well about both of them, because before I got explanation from Miss Ine, I thought that evaluation is wider than assessment. It was very important knowledge for me.
The elements of assessment are:
1.      Purpose is what the purpose of teacher wants to assess.
2.      Measurement is technique that used to assess.
3.      Evaluation is how to interpret the data.
4.      Use: diagnosis, grading, instruction.
There were many others things that I understand, but I cannot explain in this reflection, because it will very long.
The part that I was still confused is about the effect of assessment in the class, because I have different perception with my friend in my group. My opinion is assessment is will influence the students’ learning motivation and goals, it can be increase and decrease depend of each student. After that, of course it will influence the students’ achievement. In other hand, my friend opinion is students’ achievement used to measure or assess whether the assessment was effective or not. I will discuss again in the next time about it, so we can know what correct one is.
I thought that this session is very important for me as candidate of educator. I should know how to give effective assessment for students, so it will be positive motivation for students. There are many kinds and ways of assessment, so teacher not only assess by giving paper and pencil way. As a teacher, we should assess creatively, for example we ask our students to make something or project which in the project conclude some learning styles. It also helps students more creative.
In this meeting, I cannot reach my expectation, because I was very uncomfortable with this session. I hope in the next time, I can enjoy with the class, my classmate and activities.
